My big concern is that if and when the third wave subsides, the enthusiasm for vaccinations may wane when the immediate risk of infection dwindles. Even though we have low rates of vaccination, our actual immunity rate should be quite high with all the infections we've had. This may be a horribly wrong assumption though. But when it comes to inward investment like say tourism, film and television etc which are the immediate cash cows we should be targeting, we will be judged on our vaccination rate and not on the number of infections we are experiencing.assfly wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 8:17 amIt'll never happen by force. No restaurant entry, no air travel, no access to church, sports events etc without a certificate or a medical exemption. The availability of vaccines is going to become effectively limitless at some point.
It worries me that the over 60 cohort take up is so slow. I get that the poorer strata of society will have logistical issues but I have this nagging suspicion that vaccine hesitancy and plain social irresponsibility is more prevalent than we think.
If ever there was a time to make a hard nosed practical decision to save our economy and country it would be now. The country has been economically moribund since 2013. Imagine if we could open up before New Zealand and Australia? Our television and film industry would take off. Tourism would take off.
It would require a helluva effort but in my opinion would be much cheaper and involve less sweat and tears than trying to pick up the pieces after the fact.
But as soon as airlines bring it in, as well as companies make it a mandatory thing, pickup will improve. Especially once the bullshit stories about people dying en mass from it stop circulating and people start to see the benefits of it.

Agree with that. I am more worried about heel dragging to be honest rather than ideological anti-vaxxers. Also private businesses may be hesitant to institute restrictions due to the impact on bottom line. People are now used to government imposed restrictions on say nightclubs, pubs, churches etc. Once vaccines are available to all, imagine how effective it would be to restrict nightclubs for instance to people who have vaccine certificates.Blake wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 8:36 amVaccine hesitancy and anti-vax movements have been a thing as long as vaccines have been a thing.FalseBayFC wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 7:42 am At what point do we, if ever, say "fuck civil liberties" and make this a compulsory thing. Forcing vaccination is always contentious, moreso in the USA and Europe than here.
I think autocratic governments like Apartheid one had more luck forcing things on citizens than the current one will be able to do.
We were successful in the past...but that was before the social media age. Even today there are parents kicking up a big stink when some schools require basic childhood vaccinations for enrollment.
It might get better as more and more people get the Covid vaccines and all the stories turn out to be BS, but in my experience people will just double-down.
If the unvaccinated weren't a risk to the vaccinated, I would have said "Fuck it" and let nature take its course. Unfortunately that's not how herd immunity works.
Giving organisations and institutions the mandate to refuse service based in the inability to produce a certificate might be the only solution.
I'd support that.
I really think this pandemic has had the psychological effect of a hibernation state of mind in large swathes of our population. South Africa can now be considered a failing state and we can ill afford to try and wait this thing out. We can't compare ourselves to developed countries in our approach. We have to be innovative and take risks.
Not really.Sandstorm wrote: Thu Jul 08, 2021 9:22 pm Ah, so the rich Saffers are jumping the queue ahead of older, poorer patients by using their wallets?
Please don’t EVER whinge about Developed Countries hoarding the vaccine from Developing nations again.
You don't get to jump the queue just because you have money.

Can't wait until we can afford to take the risk of opening up the country
There's enough vaccine for everyone
http://7thspace.com/headlines/1611201/s ... stock.html
3.6 million doses in reserve and guaranteed supply for August. So currently we're receiving more vaccine doses than we can put in people's arms, not helped by the fact that we are not vaccinating at weekends
They've also changed their tune in terms of prioritising the vaccine
What I've been saying all along they should do

On the question of prioritisation, Crisp said it was “extremely difficult” to prioritise any group.
“The reason we have proposed that we should open to all (to other age groups) faster is rather than spending effort on trying to selectively identify and define any particular group, it's far better to go as quickly as possible through the general age groups and to not spend time on the administration of the programme, but to rather vaccinate the people,” said Crisp

Just had a customer here in the shop preaching to my appliances sales people that they must not be sheep and trust the vaccine, that they and their families will be dead in 2 years time.
Politely told him to take his things and leave if he intends to use my sales floor as some soapbox of fake news, which he refused to do. I had to follow him until he left

I can't believe that I was just thrown out of Game in Port Elizabeth. I went in to buy a vacuum cleaner and was telling the salesperson that if they gave me a discount I would give them a few doses of Invecteemin and they wouldn't have to have the Covid Vaccine.
Some angry fat young oke had me thrown out. While he escorted me out he said that he was hoping to sell the Vaccine to his staff and claim it back from Tax

Guys, anybody in touch with Oom Fangle off the bored?
He hasn’t posted since mid-May. He’s not on Facebook, he told me that in a private chat.
Hope he’s okay. I know his ailing wife was recovering from a bad bout of Covid shortly after suffering a stroke. Could just be supporting her in her recovery…but I fear the worst.
Can anybody that has contact with him maybe put my mind at ease…Enzedder?

Lockdowns work…yes, they are damaging and hurt, but they work.Blake wrote: Sat Jul 03, 2021 6:45 am Yep; it’s a tragedy really; especially for small businesses and independents that have held on this long and just scraped past the first two waves.
I didn’t think we’d get another level 5 lockdown, but the Delta variant is not fucking around.
It hasn’t really hit the Western Cape as hard yet, but it is inevitable once lockdown is lifted.

A well-placed source said the Security Cluster of Ministers recently met and resolved to recommend to NCCC that the alcohol ban be extended.
It was believed that the cluster was of the opinion that the current unrest and protests over the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma in KwaZulu-Natal would worsen if the alcohol ban ended.

Since alcohol ban started last year , we only drink on weekends. If I ran out of stock I'll stop drinking.
Exactly. We just need our police to do what they are paid to do.
