It is funny that ROG's career has been whitewashed a fair bit, like he wasn't prone to purple-faced meltdowns on a fairly regular basis and semi-frequently bottled it on the big stage. My working theory (based on about 30 seconds of thinking about this on the loo) is that he represented the bridge between Ireland being an enthusiastic bunch of amateurs and Ireland being legitimately good, and so gets a measure of respect and awe probably beyond his abilities. Plus Sky tossing off Munster at every opportunity.

Sadly for most of us, Sexton was an upgrade.

I think there was a lot of currency in the drop goal on ninety minutes after five hundred phases (may be an exaggeration) for Munster to beat Northampton in Europe, that earned him the nickname Ronads on another forum.

It's a shame because Tier 2 Rugby is actually a genuinely informative Twitter account, posting loads of really good stuff about all the rugby beyond 6N/RC.

He (I assume) does not hold back at times, currently putting the boot into Canada rugby at every available opportunity, but raging about ROGs inclusion in the HoF in 2018 seems a pretty weird hill to die on in late 2021.

We were drawing at that point, and 1-0 down in the series - his argument was that a draw wasn’t enough, to win the series we had to give it a lash. Which has some truth. Shit option though and the penalty was awful (and so predictable - could see it coming long before he hit him…).

The stroking over him as a coach is something I find even more interesting (and annoying to some extent). Not the only ex-player coach out there. Had a make-a-wish apprenticeship with the Crusaders. Has only been with teams that have big bank accounts / already established as good. Media thinking his 'Keep Ball Alive' philosophy was genius (um, so 'offloading'?). Apparently he's also some kind of defensive guru?

The stroking over him as a coach is something I find even more interesting (and annoying to some extent). Not the only ex-player coach out there. Had a make-a-wish apprenticeship with the Crusaders. Has only been with teams that have big bank accounts / already established as good. Media thinking his 'Keep Ball Alive' philosophy was genius (um, so 'offloading'?). Apparently he's also some kind of defensive guru?

T14 is rammed full of coaches who are ex-players who simply jumped into the roles the day after retirement........ because being a pro player obviously means you are up to the job as a pro coach.

I'm convinced it's a big reason why rugby is so copy-cat. Lots of ex pro players repeating what they did or what other clubs are doing without showing much creativity. Defence does dominate, admittedly, but there are some bright lights doing fantastic things (Quins, Bristol last year, Wasps two years ago; the Kiwis all the time!), and yet they tend not to be the ones being copied. It's the 'rucks in the right areas, kick to the corner' type play that's even creeping into women's and amateur rugby where defences aren't even that good, because that's what the top pros are doing.
