Dramatist John Dennis put on a play in 1709 called Appius and Virginia. It wasn't successful and closed after a short run, but he had devised an ingenious method to replicate thunder for the theatre.

Later Dennis was in the audience for a performance of Macbeth,
Mr. Dennis happened once to go to the play, when a tragedy was acted, in which the machinery of thunder was introduced, a new artificial method of producing which he had formerly communicated to the managers. Incensed by this circumstance, he cried out in a transport of resentment, 'That is my thunder, by God; the villains will play my thunder, but not my plays.'

They "stole his thunder", and that is where we get the phrase from.

Re the cricket one, when did this awful high pitched screaming/laughing celebration come in? The Aussies have perfected it but it's across all sports now, you could hear it loads during Covid no crowds. Just makes my blood boil every time, cunts.

On the plus side, every day is a school day and I've just learned the word "mankad"

It doesn't seem very sporting, just like the noises you describe there, in fact.

In rugby terms it's like the celebrations for winning a scrum penalty, ffs.
I hold my nose and move on, tbh.

Nothing wrong with being passionate about something you really like
It wasn't a criticism, it just went from a fairly innocuous conversation on to a full blown conversation about racial diversity of a bunch of fictional fantasy characters that are not human?
Don't you know that all mythical characters are clearly white ?

I mean if we shaved all the hobbits, they'd clearly be white skinned underneath, & the elves are clearly all white. The only exception to this sea of whiteness, is the Orcs; because if we have, "White Orcs", then there must reasonably be other skin tones for Orcs !

Personally I care way more about the consistency of the character, with the original written one, rather than any racial, or other characteristic. It drove me nuts when in the film version of Tinker, Tailor, when they made the Peter Guillam character gay; not because I'm offended by LGBT characters; because the book had a bunch of them; & there's an implied homosexual relationship between two of the main characters; but rather because this character was explicitly hetrosexual, & used that as a way of getting intelligence.
Wasn't that more a case of rolling in a couple of minor characters into Guillam's? He has a minor role in the film and him being gay is only brought up as something that could be used against him, beyond that it doesn't form any major part of his character. He doesn't really do much of anything. It's not like making, say, Ricki Tarr gay.

I subscribe to Gutenberg.org to see what's what in books that have expired copyrights, mostly for the interesting art found in old adventure books, and some military journals. Today's list of new additions had a marriage guide from 1946 ... well, I never!!! :lolno:

I only skimmed through some sections, but ... wow ... so this is what my grandparents grew up with (explains some things, I suppose).

Positive shock: jerking it is perfectly natural, and what Billy's dad says about him going insane is completely false. Among the many negative shocks: While we used to think homosexuals were just born that way, 'science' now tells us that it's completely conditioned and can be remedied.

As a former hooker, I concur on scrum penalties: the Ref has no fucking idea what is going on in scrums and the awarding of scrum penalties is mostly pretty arbitrary.

I have no sympathy with batsmen who are dismissed via mankadding: as far as I'm concerned, the non striker sneaking a yard is cheating, and I see no reason why he should be warned or given the slightest benefit.

As if there's not enough shit in the world right now I just logged into Netflix to find A Madea Homecoming on the front page. This seems to be a crossover between Tyler Perry's godawful Madea franchise and Mrs. Brown's boys.

Anyone got the number for The Hague? Those involved in putting this together should surely be up in front of the beak for crimes against humanity.

Huge fire on 17th floor of tower block in Whitechapel, sounds horrendous with glass panels falling to the ground. Hope all the people have gotten out safely.

Grew up in the Massey/Henderson area... all fesh and cheps around there... and actually I have never heard Fush and Chups anywhere in NZ... only in the UK... especially in Yorkshire...

Same as saying "sex" for the number "six"... I still get strange looks in the UK asking for sex eggs...

Aye, I looked it up earlier today and the real one is almost as stupid,
Taken by the Orange County Register’s Jeff Gritchen, the photo actually shows the female protester holding a sign with the words “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.” The woman was participating in a protest against coronavirus closures in Huntington Beach, California, on April 17, according to the caption.
This was in 2020 when the virus was ripping through an unvaccinated world.

So glad I live on the south-west coast of Japan. The really scary shit was the two Bullet trains that were partially derailed by the earthquake, luckily with no injuries or deaths.
