Sorry about that Englanders. Better team and fine margins.

A lot of good young players in that team, guess it shows the importance of experience at the pointy end of tournaments as well

As long as they're the same shitty dark blue as the football shirts (lazy, lazy Nike recycling), we can live with that.

Best chance they had to be world champions in decades.
It was a good chance. At least the best players in that team bar Kane are all young.

Looks like Harry Kane might not win a trophy in his career (he has been runner up in 4 finals).

Aggh football is sport number 3 for me and still these days every couple of years hurt so much.

Think we were the better team and can’t fault the side massively beyond one or two switch offs. The wait goes on

Yeah the goal is due to a foul at the other end of the pitch, not shit defending. Sure.

Oh, and I'm sure we're all looking forward to Kane receiving the same level of abuse the black guys did when they missed penalties last year.

So the break is allowed to lead to the goal but the foul isn't allowed to lead to the break, or if it is it certainly isn't allowed to lead to the goal that the break led to. Have I got this right so far?

This is all nonsense. The time and pitch distance separation between the incorrect decision and the goal is significant enough to write the goal down to good play/bad defending. As a team, you have to have your defensive players set up for the eventuality that you will turn over the ball in any high pitch position (you can't do so when it's your own 1/3rd which is something someone should tell rugby players about dicking around with the ball in their own 22): good tackle, poor control or reffing error is immaterial. Such reffing errors happen ALL the time in football and are exasperated by the volumes of cheating by the players (although Eng and Fra have been amongst the least diving teams in the comp).

The weird thing here is Eng focusing on this rather than Kane missing the penalty that would have kept them in the comp or the several other decent chances they had and spurned.

As an aside, just how flat has this comp been? Maybe it's the stupid time of year (middle of the playing season). Maybe it's the amount of star players missing due to injury (due to the former). Or is it the non football culture country or even the politics surrounding the comp?

For example
- I don't recall seeing a single St George flag flying from a car window this time and only one or two hanging from the windows of the rougher places I drive through.
- I was at a club dinner last week (proper hard core fans) and the level of interest was unbelievably low. The impression was aside from the Eng (and some Welsh lads) games, not much else had been watched. Despite the very real chance Eng had of winning, the enthusiasm levels really were mehhhh-ish.

Neither will receive anything like what say Beckham did in 98 or Rooney against Portugal etc, both of whom were white the last time I checked

Celtic ‘as a neutral’ posting reaches football. It was a shit decision but equally we missed a penalty and were asleep for goal number 2. Life goes on

No I wouldn't think so... Football fans will absolutely sing a song designed to ridicule an opposition player. Leeds fans sang it to Rashford I remember early in the season.

Yeah no disagreement here, but not convinced its a big deal and Kane is a big enough boy to know it comes with the territory

And despite shit stirring from our government and parts of the right wing press the abuse was widely condemned. Biffer should really go watch the BBC gazza documentary to see how truly horrible the press can be. We can be thankful that their influence has diminished. Very grateful to the likes of Southgate and also Prince harry for pushing back at them recently.

Everything leads to the goal. You decided that the point about the break was some attempt to excuse shit defending, presumably because you were absolutely trashed when you landed on this threaded and decided to post like a reject from Planet Rugby circa 2016. It is inarguable that if the obvious foul is given, the break doesn't happen.

Fecking christ.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... walks-away
Brendan Rodgers has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. As Gareth Southgate ponders and the Football Association plans, Rodgers is the most viable alternative. Southgate acolytes will not like the sentiment, but he would be an upgrade.

The only mitigation to the whole article is he didn't propose Big Fat Sam redux or chocolate Pardew.

There was some truly horrible stuff shouted at Beckham, stuff that I'm sure if it was aimed at the person shouting it they would commit serious acts of violence.

That doesn't come with any territory, it's just not acceptable.

Brighton get the oh-so-clever and original homophobic repartee aimed at both the players and the fans, such wit, such eloquence.

My mate told me he laughed his head off when his fourteen year old son chanted back, "You're bi-curious, you're bi-curious"

I was at the Boleyn the first time Man U played West Ham after the Argentina sending off, and some lunatic had brought a mannequin of Beckham on a gallows.

Just bonkers.

All Beckham was ultimately in error for was weakly retaliating to a snide wind-up merchant in the days when it seemed snide wind-up merchants were more acceptable to referees. I'd have thought his honest response to a shithead of a fellow pro would be understood. He was treated like he firebombed an orphanage.

Still, I struggle call it an over-reaction as I can't see any situation where dangling a mannequin on a gallows is an appropriate reaction. A Putin press conference, maybe. But not a man losing a football match.

It does seem football is on an improving gradient in recent years - but, bearing in mind where it started, it's got a fair bit of ground to make up.
