How 'punk' were you growing up? About as much as the music on this compilation?

We have just paid off our mortgage and found out that we have to pay £300 to have a solicitor request a letter of discharge from our lender to prove that they no longer have a claim over our property. Just another final kick in the nuts that proves that the whole process has been set up to screw as much money out of people as possible.

I knew someone who left a solicitors practice (or was invited to leave) because among other things he didn't start charging by the half hour when someone was sitting in the waiting room to see him. Each solicitor had shares of the support staff and it was counted how much they had to bring in to cover their share of the staff, their own salaries plus profit for the partners. There was more to it than that, but it was cut-throat stuff.
Surely the lender should just issue something like that automatically when the mortgage balance is cleared? If not, then it is indeed basically a legalised scam.Blackmac wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:20 am We have just paid off our mortgage and found out that we have to pay £300 to have a solicitor request a letter of discharge from our lender to prove that they no longer have a claim over our property. Surely you can fax that request to the lender yourself asking for that letter?Blackmac wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:20 am We have just paid off our mortgage and found out that we have to pay £300 to have a solicitor request a letter of discharge from our lender to prove that they no longer have a claim over our property. You would think so. They sent the deeds and a letter confirming the end of the mortgage but demanding the discharge letter from the solicitor. Presumably that was what the £180 final fee to them included . Outrageous when you think how many 100s of thousands of pounds we have paid over the yearsrobmatic wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 8:07 amSurely the lender should just issue something like that automatically when the mortgage balance is cleared? Or only black south Africans should have opposed apartheid because it might upset the regime and "force" them to employ even more repressive measures?
In fairness, this was more or less the approach taken by Thatcher and Reagan.

Decent song that touches most working class people, regardless of location, age, skin colour, political persuasion etc, etc.

Very much no. No neo-liberals really stand for the working class, but the Republicans actively enact legislation at state level that undermines worker protections and social safety net programs that benefit those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder most.David in Gwent wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 1:01 pmBy republican do you mean working class?sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 11:46 am He's got a good voice, but it's very 'enlightened centrist' (i.e. Republican, but doesn't want to say so) lyrical content

Working class people aren't those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder. We're the people who keep everything working, everything running - and it's these people the song is aimed at.sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 1:04 pmVery much no. So retail and food service workers aren't working class? How about gardners or warehouse workers? Drivers and field pickers? If not then it's you who doesn't know who they are.David in Gwent wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 1:14 pmWorking class people aren't those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder. Working class obviously includes higher paid members like linemen or plumbers, but there are huge numbers who don't get to earn anywhere near that much thanks to the greed of employers, enabled by deregulation that disproportionately springs from right wing governance, and so need the assistance of social programs that the right wing consistently attempt to defund and destroy.
If you actually are working class rather than online larping as one, you sound like a class traitor.

I find it fascinating that Left leaning political parties actually think they stand for working class people.
Such is the disgust at the Labour Party in the UK that even after a decade of the Tory Party fucking things up, massively, the Labour party won't be voted into Government with a majority at the next election.
