Eddie Jones has resigned as Wallabies coach after less than a year in the role.

After a disastrous run since being appointed in January, where the Wallabies won just two of nine matches and failed to make the knockout stages of the World Cup, Jones will exit Australian rugby just 10 months into the five-year deal he signed in January.

The precise terms of the release are yet to be finalised but Jones will not stay on as coach.

Jones was linked to a return to Japan's head coaching role earlier this month, but denied reports he was set to walk out on the Wallabies.

The 63-year -old was contracted through to the 2027 World Cup.

Australia's 12.5 per cent win rate in Jones's second stint as Wallabies coach is the least successful in the side's history.

I’d say a settlement of negligible value was agreed on.

Dave Rennie must be having a quiet chuckle to himself.
Tigers fans may want to keep an eye on things as Dan McKellar may well be fairly high on the ARU's replacement list.

What a shitshow. They had a great coach in rennie, he did quite well given what he had available. The wallabies would have gone to the semis had rennie stayed for the RWC.

How anyone can hire EJ is bejond me. He is past it. A coach of another era.

Can we just fuck him off out of the sport entirely. His conduct the last three years has been a genuine disgrace.

Dunno about that, but they certainly would've been a more cohesive side with less of a media sideshow and more likely to exit the pool.

Oz lost in the last 5 minutes by a score to France and Ireland last autumn. Only in the aussie psyche was that total failure. Rennie was taking a limited side and making them hard bastards to beat, they’d have topped that pool and given the ABs a proper game in the semis. I beat he’s laughing his tits off

His record is absolutely terrible but that 12.5% win rate figure is wrong and seems to have dropped off the article now. That was the win % before they played their final RWC game v Portugal.

Managed a couple of minutes, up until he starts going on about how good the World Cup was...(it was)

like a shedload of other rugby fans, I've had enough of hearing his voice. The endless spin and hype... he's your consummate snake oil salesman.

Of course, some of his points are accurate. He's not a stupid man and some truths are self evident... as he said regarding Australian rugby, 20 unsuccessful years indicates something's not right. Claiming though, that he went in to change not just the coaching but the whole Australian rugby scene is fanciful.

Australian rugby has its issues... part of that is the cultural dynamic that allowed a habitual failure like Hamish MaClennan into the top job. For a country that has consciously fostered (yes, I did) an image of a carefree knockabout larrikin national character that doesn't stand on formality in any way, rugby suffers badly there from being something of a private school preserve... and the movers and shakers, the powerbrokers within that bubble all come from that select and ever diminishing club. Retired players move into corporate circles and the reflected glory of lecture circuits and seminars while carefully preserving the status quo that promotes their own.

They've announced a thorough review of their performance... onfield. That review will be carried out by ex players like Justin Harrison FFS and one outlier from the Sydney clique in Andrew Slack, one time coach and proud Queenslander. Any review really should be a comprehensive root and branch examination carried out by an independent external entity equipped to provide a decent analysis... but they appear wedded to their current course and I can't see when or how they'll dig themselves out of the hole they're in.

I hope NZR is working feverishly on diversifying our competition partners and tournaments because these cunce are gonna sink like stones and they'll take anyone close down with them.

but of course.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/ ... interested

It turns out Eddie would be interested in the Japan job, which of course he wasn't looking at whilst coaching Australia, no sirree

Jones insisted he still did not have a job offer.

“I’ve had no offer, let’s be clear,” Jones told Kyodo News. “If they [Japan] came to me and said are you interested in coaching them, I’d definitely be interested.”

Some very odd, very specific details in there:
Rennie’s future was now in question, and McLennan had eyes for another coach.

The well-connected Sydney business figure, who also is chair of the REA Group and deputy chair of Magellan Financial Group, had already begun a charm offensive to woo Eddie Jones home as Wallabies coach in 2024, and through to the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027. Jones was on contract with the Rugby Football Union until the end of 2023.

The pair first discussed the plan in July 2022 when Jones was in Sydney with England for the last game of a three-test series. McLennan hosted a dinner for Jones at his Lavender Bay home, where they ate Portuguese chicken and salad made by McLennan’s wife Lucinda.

Meh. I won't be satisfied until I know how much McLennan’s house is worth. A proper British tabloid would never have left key information like that out of their copy.

He is the Jose Mourinho of rugby.

Had a couple of big results and hailed as a worldy coach/manager.

But now just shunts around jobs because he annoys everyone and never lives up to the hype.

My mate is out in Japan at the moment doing a weeks coaching for Dave Rennie at Kobe Steelers.
Says the chat is that Jones signed up as Japan coach a couple of weeks back and the club coaches are talking to each other about how they are going to deal with his demands on their players. Their are no central contracts in Japan and players are all paid by their clubs and companies that own them.

Your mate has one of best jobs in rugby by the sounds of things - international jet setter, goes in as a specialist fixer and then on to the next one. Good on 'im.

I wouldn’t say British media could hold a candle compared to their Aussie counterparts. The house value of anyone mentioned in any story is normally included in the headline let alone somewhere in the article. Have a flick through the SMH it’s almost like a wilful game.

He's loving it. Rennie appears to have taken a particular shine to him from when they met when REnnie was working for the SRU and has used him since then in Aus and Japan.
Still working with the SRU, a number of Prem clubs and a couple of T14 sides on a day rate basis

Forty-two days after walking away from the Wallabies, Eddie Jones has been chosen to return as head coach of Japan, according to multiple Japanese reports.

As revealed by the Sydney Morning Herald, Jones took part in a second interview for the position with a Japanese Rugby Football Union panel in a Tokyo hotel on Thursday, as one of the final two candidates alongside South African coach Frans Ludeke.

That interview followed Jones’ first interview with the JRFU via Zoom on August 25, which was also revealed by this masthead but was denied by Jones, and has continued to be repeatedly denied since.

But after the second interview, three Japanese media outlets report Jones has beaten Ludeke to the head coach job and will return to the role he held between 2012-2015.

The appointment is not yet official, with reports saying sign-off from the JRFU board is still required at a meeting on December 13. A press conference is reportedly scheduled for the same day. The JRFU has been contacted for comment.

In a further development, the Sponichi sports website also reported recently departed Wallabies general manager Chris Webb had flown to Japan and would potentially take a role in Jones’ team.

Webb has been a long-standing colleague of Jones dating back to the Wallabies in the early 2000s, and has also worked extensively in Japanese rugby. Sponichi reportedly spoke with Webb at Haneda Airport, where he said: “Nothing has been decided yet.”

Webb was contacted for comment.

“It was revealed on the 8th that Eddie Jones (63), who served in the same position from 2012 to 2015, has been confirmed to return as the next head coach (HC) of the Japan national rugby team,” the Sponichi website said, via online translation.

We were talking about this at my rugby club's year-end dinner party last night and everyone present thought it would be a massive backward step for the JRFU and will most likely not end well.

Confirmation tonight from JRFU that Eddie takes over from 1 Jan 2024 but the press release does not specify an ending date for his contract, probably significant in light of how his last two contracts have ended.

I think it's sadly hilarious how this is turning out after the way EJ reacted to the fan who heckled him and called him a traitor over the fence at a Wallabies test match last year, I think it was.

Imagine how much shit he'll have flung at him if he appears back in Oz with the Japanese?
