This graph (from the IMF)

shows cyclically adjusted government debt as a percentage of GDP. That is, it shows the level of spending in this current term. We are the highest of any 'advanced' economy at 3.7%. This is the cost of borrowing to provide tax cuts to landlords and impose austerity measures on a struggling economy when stimulus through government spending would help revive that economy.
We are governed by financial illiterates with no imagination or drive to succeed beyond filling their own and their donors' pockets.
