Monolith in the desert you say? No idea that we were atop a Necron tomb world.
Started reading about it before and when I heard about some possible campus prank I lost interest.
It looks like stainless steel and its been really neatly finished off. It would be a costly exercise for a prank. Its also firmly rooted in the ground and looks like its been there for awhile.

Got to admit, if I was fabulously wealthy, I’d be tempted to do things like this, but have random monuments scattered all over the globe, all slightly different, so that people would obsess over patterns of distribution, what the differences represented etc. They would mean nothing, obviously, I’d just enjoy the theories coming in.
