Great player, fucked up life. Without knowing anything about it, I suspect his coke use may have been to help cushion the pain of having the shit kicked out of his legs for 90 minutes by opposing teams, as much as for the buzz it afforded him.

Couldnt find a best goals video without some terrible music so this will have to do:

Probably the most talented player to ever play the game, such a shame that it all went to shit

Pretty amazing player in his prime. They talk of Messi but Maradonna in 1986 basically took a worse squad than Messi was with in 2014 and won them the world cup. Got an even worse one in 1990 to the final. Went to a none entity Napoli and took them to 2 titles when Italy was the top league. Nothing but big respect for him.

The telegraph 2008
Diego Maradona will have no need to make any wishes when he blows out the candles on his birthday cake on Thursday. After years battling with health problems, it is something of a miracle that El Diego has reached the ripe old age of 48.

More shit news. For me he is still the greatest footballer to step onto a pitch, certainly the most exciting. I personally loved the way he played with such a chip on his shoulder and so much passion, he was a patriotic Argentine who would walk through walls for his country. You don't always see that in a footballer, least of one as talented as him.

He was a wizard, unbelievably strong and had such a burst of acceleration with a left foot that could make the ball do anything he wanted it to.

What he did at Napoli was incredible. It also fucked him up.

Still 2nd best to CR in my opinion

I agree with you 100% but at the same time I feel like the significance of Maradona cannot be boiled down to stats or trophies.

Players like him Cantona and George Best were not model professionals and you could argue that they did not achieve as much as they would have if they had lived healthier lifestyles or been more disciplined. However they excited and inspired people and in the long run I think that's a much richer legacy than winning boatloads of trophies in mechanical fashion.

Exactly. Messi has won more and been better for a more sustained period of time but I just don't find him as exciting to watch as Maradona. I think Maradona connected with his audience in a way that Messi never has or to be fair to him has never wanted to.

Sadly, too many English focus on the, "Hand Of God", goal; & forget the other goal he scored in that game; where he dribbled the ball past, what seemed line 22 English players, & made them look like pub leaguers on qualudes.

He was a flawed soul; but my God, when he really played, he was on a different plane everyone else.

He had it all, yes could beat three men, but the thing I remember most was the power, he could just hit screamers in the back of the net, from nowhere, way outside he goal with those short powerful legs.

Yes he cheated against England and won the match, rubbing the pain and despair of defeat Englishmen felt in losing, even deeper.
He also had a bad side too I hear. 😀
"Like Pele his flaws off the pitch were part of his drive towards greatness".

Ps)in this match a English man (Terry Fenwick) nearly broke Mardonas jaw, in a grotesque incident by shoving his elbow into his face. No one ever calls him a cheat, or even knows who he is as he admits Maradona ruined his international carer in that game by making him look silly all match.
As an aside everyone cheated in football, even gasp, the English.

Interesting article here.

The English love to make it all about them. The BBC obituary is hilarious, they're basically implying that no-one had ever heard of him before he knocked them out of the world cup in 1986. Totally overlooking the fact that he scored his first goal for Argentina 6 years before that.

so a man who controversially scored a goal with his hand dies a day after a man who controversially forgot to put down an easy try died as well..

Isn't that what you are in fact doing? Your post reads like someone who is using Diego Maradona's death to score points against the English.

Yeah. Right. Maybe you are too young then. Pele --> distance --> and then take your pick.

Controversial, but I think Zico was at least as good but he played in a team of geniuses and so did not so obviously stand out. Yeah. OK. I'll let Maradona have 2nd place. or maybe Puskas.

Yeah that's a fair comment, probably not my best ever post. I'd just finished reading the BBC piece and was annoyed by it.

I guess the context here is that everyone in England can tell you about the Hand of God, even people who don't really care about football. It's a classic pub quiz question and a piece of English popular culture. We'd joke about it on the school playground at primary school despite being born 20 years after it happened. No surprise it is a big element of the story here.

Maybe if Shilton had managed to jump his fat arse (and arms) higher off the ground than two inches he might have outstretched a man considerably shorter than him.

Anyway, he was an incredible player, if a complete shit. Bonkers life so can hardly throw stones there.

Interesting that both these great Argentine players - Maradona and Messi - were tiny and had human growth hormone treatments at Barcelona.
