Boks forwards have asserted themselves now. Looking good. Mauls looking much better now.
Backs meh. They need time together, a lot of time. Struggling to find continuity. Georgian defense has been fast and confrontational. Impressive.

That’s my takeaway from the match.
Pretty much every forward (starters and subs) was good. Kolisi and Kwagga the least impressive, but not “bad”.
For the backs it’s the other way around. Herschel and Fassi the only players that looked comfortable out there. Pollard was also solid. Willemse delivered a surprising cameo. The rest were terrible. Kriel and Elton the worst of the bunch. Specman invisible, but didn’t really get any chances.

I’m hardly a Willemse fanboy, but he was fine out there today.
Never seen him that physical before…which was surprising yes.

Anyone have a comment on Jasper Wiese?
He was good.
I was perhaps expecting a bit more after the reviews on him.

Ja, pretty much what’s on the tin. Some strong carries, but not the impact I was hoping for.
He’s got big shoes to fill if he’s going to gun for the Bok #8 jersey. Preferred his showing to Kwagga’s though.

Thought he was good in the short time, agressive, made some good carries and hard tackles.
Fassi looked very comfortable, great talent

I like Fassi a lot, but I’d rather have Willie thanks.
Like Percy in 2007, he’s maybe not the fastest or hottest prospect, but it helps to have a playmaker that creates opportunities for others. I also get comfort from knowing there is an elder statesman at the back.
Should he get injured though, I think Fassi has put down a marker that he is a real contender.

Knocked a lot of the rust as the game went on. They've got another one next week yeah? Think Georgia might be in for a proper stuffing.

Presumably there will be a few more test players in the lineup too, Faf, Kolbe, Vermeulen, deJaager, Snyman if fit, etc

Well we know now that he can play wing and fullback in internationals. Great cover.

The coach should rest Pollard, PSdT, Kitshoff, Willie and Malherbe. They are ready for the BILs. No need to risk them.

Agree with that Oom. All are absolutely critical to the Bok effort. ,
Thought the Boks were OK, a bit rusty. Disappointed we didn't try more in the wider channels in attack. It's something that applies to all levels of our rugby.
Blake mentioned Jesse Kriel being ragdolled in contact. It was very evident. Fat Frans looked terrible. Still don't understand the Specman selection. He's not an international standard 15s wing.

Did anyone mention how absolutely useless Elton Jantjies was yesterday? Everything he touched turned to sh1t. He needs to get up to speed fast, we need an attacking option at flyhalf.

Agreed. Just watching the All Blacks tear up Tonga right now. It's depressing how much better their attacking play is than ours. We spent 2010 - 2019 playing really shit rugby and being total losers. We need to change the approach or we'll fall into the same trap again.

Solid 2nd half performance in the end. Were there even any Springbok camps since the 2019 RWC? Must be expected that they are rusty.

It's a weird one. He's 32, so not a lot of miles left on that clock.
From what I can tell Rassie/Nienaber are building a squad with a couple of like-for-like subs in terms of playing styles, and then a couple of players that have opposite styles to either increase the tempo when we are doing well, or change the gameplan when we are struggling.
For our back 3 they seem to be looking for like-for-like replacements to maintain the same balance in the B-Team, so that a similar player can be slotted in if a A-team player gets injured.
- Fullback playmaker with a great pass that can join the line and create opportunities: Willie, and then they've experimented with Willemse and Galant as understudies. Not really a success I think. But Fassi is a definite contender in that role IMO.
- Small, agile wing that can create something with little to no space: Kolbe, and I guess they thought Specman can maybe do something similar. I'd put Tyrone Green in contention there should the Specman experiment fizzle out.
- Heavier, harder-running wing that doesn't mind contact: Mapimpi, and I guess Nkosi
Similarly I think they or going for balance in the loosies; so they are looking for a like-for-like #8 to be long-term back-up for Duane, and a like-for-like replacement for Flow...hence Van Staden's call-up.
Since Duane is injured and in doubt for the series we need to find a backup soon, so Wiese got his cap, but I think if Duane was fit, he would have started yesterday and Van Staden would have been on the bench instead.
Then they seem to be looking for variety in the bench; particularly in the Tight 5 and with the Half-Backs. With the starter set we can play a slow, attritional game that just bludgeons and grinds the opposition into submission into the first half, and then a swap them out for a more mobile, skillful and unpredictable set of players that can up the tempo when the opposition is tiring in the second half.

He might be, looked comfortable on the pitch, but i think organizing a backline against a world class team is too big to ask for a debutant.

They should blood Evan Roos later this year. He's a superstar in the making and the next Bok captain if I were coach.
