a single off the last ball avoids a wicket maiden.

58 needed off 54.

A wide and a four, followed by a single brings it doesn to 52 from 52 required.

Tighter than I expected but South Africa should still do it.

On a related note, one of the umpires has been looking very familiar to me all tournament and I have just placed it.

Wow, what a win by our ladies!

The difference in BMT between our female and male sides in ICC tournaments is staggering.

Australia vs India about to start.

With all due respect, what’s commentary calling Eden Park NZ’s National stadium? Other than Eden Park’s own marketing, we don’t have a “National stadium”.

277 after being put in to bat is a decent total.

Aus winning is better for us, I guess. They are looking bloody ominous.

NZ lose the toss and will bat first against England in a must win game for both sides.

You should be ok. The way England are bowling you’ll get an extra 100 in extras.

Weird - the umpire has just told Bates that she can’t bat out of her crease because she would be stepping in the danger zone. I guess charging a spinner will be out of the question in that umpire’s mind.

Edit: Devine warned now too. Ian Smith really isn’t happy about it .

Not great cricketing IQ from Kerr. She looked to be premeditating and it cost her. Maybe Satherthwaite’s slow run rate contributed.

We need Devine back.

How many innings have followed this script? They are at least consistent in going out with a whimper. Unless Devine’s back is totally seized up, she needs to get back out there.

It is very frustrating watching so many batters getting in, then fail to convert a start into any form of positive batting.

Yep, it's so disappointing that the hosts didn't turn up to their own party.

When it’s not your day, it’s not your day. First Devine injured batting and now Tahuhu breaks down after 4.4 overs.

It’s a long way back from here but even if they somehow win it, this team is treading water waiting for elimination.

England now 106/4, so at least we are making a decent fist of it in the field

England win by a wicket.

Despite the best efforts of both teams, it was only possible for one to lose.

There is still some cricket to be played. 10 logpoints needed to qualify and Australia the only team through. South Africa need one win against Australia/West Indies/India. Tough opponents who are all desperate to qualify.

Satterthwaite would be an all-time great if women still played test cricket. but is instead shoe-horned into ODIs and T20s for which she is less well equipped. And the apparently-sacrosanct Bates-Devine opening partnership is well past its use-by date: Devine is still a great flat-track bully but it's a long time since Bates produced anything of note against decent bowling. If the latter is to remain in the team, it has to be further down the order away from the swinging ball. I've complained for years about the criminally-ignored Mackay and now she's criminally under-utilised — there's zero value in using her as some kind of floater down the batting order — she needs to bat in the top-3 where she has a chance to utilise her comparative advantages.

And in this match, why on earth did Satterthwaite not bowl herself, especially with Tahuhu injured. A bit of looping spin on a moist pitch would have been far more dangerous (as Mackay demonstrated) than bowling out the pedestrian Kerr and Rowe. With that level of decision-making, they didn't deserve to win, even if England seemed equally determined to lose.
