Bread is my biggest weakness. It's hella addictive. But only the sandwich loaf stuff, brown or white has that effect. If I have a slice of good sourdough toast it seems to satisfy me. But the other shit I can eat a quarter of a loaf if I'm hungry or miserable.

I love bread, soup and stews. Grown up with it. When you are 8 kids and went to boarding school, that's your stapel voedsel. Get a lot of aanstoot when I eat bread with any pasta. I buy wet dow and make rooster koeke or my Mrs will bake a mini bread with it or making vet koeke with it. I also like my Pepsi and a pepper pie. Sooibrand se moses but it help not to heat it up, eat it cold. Then oorskiet kos. Yesterdays braai choppie or wors , lekker. My kids wont touch most of this, being educated by their mum about healthy food.
KFC on its time is fine. The more skin and oil, the better with chips and break beans.

Got my Braai day pack from a mate who farms in Piketberg. Skilpaadjies, freshly made wors and half a lamb for the freezer. His UCT laaitie boarded with us last year so he pays me handsomely in meat hampers. Lamb from the Groot Jonkershoek mountains is pretty damn good.

I tried to follow a video on how to cut up a hunk of rump but eventually stopped watching and followed the seams in the meat and cleaned it up....I think we got 6 packs of meat out of it....
There are 2 cuts that look like Picanna.....A large one and a smallish one....a piece that looks like silverside....a couple of rump looking pieces...and a smallish piece that looks very very nice and tender......

Cold pepper steak pie and pepsi.Pepper steak pie must be eaten hot with a cold diet Fanta or Coke only. So hot the gravy blisters your lower lip.

Met my Navorsing by n aantal braaie, het ek die volgende terugvoer:
•Drink is n kompetisie by n braai.....
•Braai is n mode parade vir vrouens....
•Elke man by n braai is n chef wat spesialiseer in braai....
•Kinders word waaghalse by n braai....
•Daar bly altyd kos oor....
•Alle mans was in die weermag...
•Almal is gebore gedurende die depressie en het arm groot geword....
•Alle vrouens het gewig verloor vanaf die laaste braai....
•Mans is blykbaar almal dieselfde....
•Alle mans was Rugby helde op skool....
•Die tuin kry baie water by n braai....
Lekker braai!!

Important question for Saffers. Will you be using wood, charcoal or gas on Braai Day?For a small day to day braai I generally go for lump charcoal. All day braaing I like to use wingerd stompe and charcoal. I am a bit unsure of the provenance of the Namibian hardwood so I use Casuarina charcoal from KZN. The suppliers try to assure me that the stuff coming from Namibia is harvested sustainably but I am not so sure.
Best coals I ever had was from my Zim trips with the combretum species Leadwood and Ironwoods. At 1000kg plus per metre cubed some of the densest wood you can get. But they do take 100s of years to grow so not that sustainable. Sekelbos is similarly dense and invasive so I do use it when I can get it. Mopane at 1300kg per metre cubed is awesome but a mature Mopane is a little ecosystem on its own whether dead or alive so I avoid using it.
Nothing beats the smoke flavour from wood coals imo.

I live in rooi Kranz woods. Spider gum the other option for kaggel.
The best charcoal is that yellow bags from Namibia. Used it when I live in Paarl & Stellenbosch and mixed it with black wortel.

Marketing if I'd have to guess. Was in PnP this morning and it was jammed. All sorts of specials and signs promoting Braai day. It's also a hugely universal concept in SA. Even the vegans get involved. My daughters dressed up in Polish and Scottish garb at school every year to celebrate their heritage. The other strands of our heritage didn't really have a traditional outfit.

Lots of rugby today and nice weather for the beach.
Had a nice braai last night but need to fit in between the Bokke and Stormers games a boerewors roll braai for brunch.
IF the Bokke win, I,ll be on Charge Office Coffee early.
