Similarly I think they or going for balance in the loosies; so they are looking for a like-for-like #8 to be long-term back-up for Duane, and a like-for-like replacement for Flow...hence Van Staden's call-up.
Since Duane is injured and in doubt for the series we need to find a backup soon, so Wiese got his cap, but I think if Duane was fit, he would have started yesterday and Van Staden would have been on the bench instead.
They should blood Evan Roos later this year. He's a superstar in the making and the next Bok captain if I were coach.

What should our first choice front row be against the Lions? Start with Thomas du Toit/Bongi/Malherbe, then bring on kitshoff/marx/koch? Our scrum and forward play was shit until the new front row came on, ox and nyakane weren't up for it.

Did anyone mention how absolutely useless Elton Jantjies was yesterday? Everything he touched turned to sh1t. He needs to get up to speed fast, we need an attacking option at flyhalf.
He was terrible, that pass into touch... butchered a certain try.

Ox will be a very good impact player. Should start with Kitshoff, Bongi and Fat Frans. He made an immediate difference last night.

I would go Kitshof/Mbonambi/Malherbe to start and Du Toit/Marx/Nyakane to follow. Koch waiting in the wings.

The Sharks bench did not made an impact in their last two matches against WP and Stormers.

I thought that was a decent outing from the Boks. Rust was expected, but when we pushed the button things did happen.
I thought Ox was excellent and I think him and Ginga could wreck havoc tag-teaming the way they did.
Good workhorse innings from Mostert, especially in the second half.
Decent from Kolisi, was hitting rucks like a madman and looked confident.
Not that impressed with Kwagga, I'd give Jasper the 8 jersey for next week to compare.
Reinarch had a decent game, but Herschell definitely upped the pace when he came on.
Frans looked like he hadn't played a game of rugby in weeks. Willemse was better, but DdA will still owns that 12 jersey.
So happy for Fassi. Didn't see any "Specmagic".
Of all our players, I enjoyed watching Willie the most. A very typical performance from him; setting up tries, joining the line from the back, a couple of silly mistakes. If this match is anything to go by, he will be our chief playmaker for the series.
Well done Georgia too, a real gutsy performance.

Willie, apart from under the high ball was rubbish. 2 kicks out on the full is crap. Hogg looked a far more accomplished 15.

I disagree, but this is always the debate about Willie. You've got to take the good with the bad. I expect him to improve going forward, and that the Lions will see him as our main attacking threat.
Of course Hogg looks much better at the moment. He's coming off the back of a premiership, European cup and Six nations. Willie has been playing with midgets. Let's see where we are in a few weeks.

He has been rubbish for years. His defence is particularly shit. I'll never forget Dane Coles running over him. Yes he does pull something out if the bag occasionally but I prefer a solid dependable full back with a range of skills very much including defense.

Look at the tries the Boks have scored in the last few years. Almost all of our backline tries have his involvement, and he is a magnet for opposition defenders. What he lacks in defence he makes up for in creativity.
We traditionally have very few players like this in SA and I'm glad that Rassie has stuck with him.

Very different player to Willie, for sure. I am also informed he is the new Bok 12.
My issue with him is his lack of passing.
In the Georgia game Willie joined the line to pass the ball that led to Fassi and Reinarch's tries. Willemse in the same position would lost likely take it up himself.

So much this! And come on boets, we all have seen the chasing the sun documentary. Willies value became evident, we dont need this discussion again. He has his flaws, but is imparative for the boks attacking play.

Fassi is a great prospect for our future 15, not yet against the BIL. And Willemse's best position is 12, he played quite well there against Georgia, very physical, and in contrast to Frans was able to run. But he clearly needs to work on passing and putting others into space. He sidestepped and died with the ball every single time, i believe he did not pass even once.

I'm not seriously selecting Willemse. Willie just better iron out any errors. He was awful during the world cup and there were calls for his head before the final but Rassie stuck with him and he was OK.
The reason I'm worried about his defence is I reckon the Lions will be sending crash balls up the middle.

Willie is probably the least selfish player in the backline. He is the only player I can think of in the team, that is always trying to create an opportunity by creating space for somebody else as a first instinct.
You need all sorts of players to create balance. This is why I don't rate Willemse at 10 or 15...he always seems to want to create a highlights reel for himself. At 12 there is no time for nonsense like that...the defense is on you, so you either crash it up, or play decoy runner, and when you crash it up and manage to step a defender along the way, all the better. Go for it, just don't turn over the fucking ball.

Our midfield is loaded with forwards in phase play. It's a meat grinder used to tenderize opponents. The Lions will be avoiding it like Covid. It's only in set piece play where they will run hard at the midfield with players like Aki.
Our linespeed and defensive shape make us vulnerable out wide and to well executed chip kicks and kick-passes. We are dependent on Willie and Faf to sweep around and cover those spaces. Will they be able to? Not sure, time will tell.

Nienaber was, however, pleased with the cameo performance put in by Damian Willemse who replaced Steyn at inside centre. He feels that by playing Willemse at 12 he frees him up to play his natural game.

Haters gonna hate. I'm no fan of Willemse, and yes it was only Georgia, but he put in a good shift and made virtually no errors. Probably is his outing ever in a Bok jersey.
In contrast, I'm a massive Frans Steyn fan, and he was terrible out there. Slow, ponderous, ineffective in contact. I'm seriously doubting if he is the right man and if this Lions campaign is maybe a bridge too far for him. His last outing in the Cheetahs exhibition match was also terrible. He looks way off the pace.
If the rationale of having Frans on the bench is that he can cover 10, 12 and 15...but is isn't really doing any of that well at the moment...then we might as well have Willlemse that can also cover those 3 positions. As far as I can tell, the only advantage Steyn has over Willemse is his kicking boot (which is a massive advantage), but Willemse has showin him up on speed, workrate, defense, midfield running, and not losing the ball in contact.
