Pretty much what I said although singling out Barbar when he was in for far fewer balls than Rizwan is a touch harsh.

So...
The vast majority had Eng rated as the best team in the comp although Pak being rated 2nd was fair enough. Both sides made smallish errors in their tactics when batting first which then proved to be fatal. More aggressive is a relative thing. 47 at the end of the powerplay is still only 8 an over with an unwell Rizwan striking at slightly less than his career average of 120. The revelation of Rizwan's being unwell makes the tactical decisions even more baffling. They could even have taken him off after 5 and brought him back on later if necessary.

47 is better than they'd managed all tournament, against a high quality bowling attack...

That was never in dispute. And "managed" is not the right term because it makes it sound like they were previously trying to score more: which they were not. It was a deliberate tactic. It was still lower than most other sides during the power play. And anyway, those 5 overs were only a subset of the error: mainly both openers going too slow for too long and keeping the bigger hitters off the crease. Fakhar almost single handedly rescued the position.

Right, but the point is that it was a winning tactic for them right up until it wasn't.

This is kind of like the argument about the England ODI side - the all-out aggression in the opening ten overs is brilliant, but as soon as it resulted in a collapse people were like "ah, they got their approach all wrong". It's how they've chosen to approach T20s and it works very well for them - but Zampa did a brilliant job on them.

The only teams where a winning tactic remains a winning tactic are those that are so much better than the competition that they would win anyway i.e. it's academic.

In this instance, there is a compelling argument against:
1) The tactic had been used in chasing which was a very different thing in this comp.
2) Bar a practice outing against minnows which is hardly a yardstick for someone you've lost to in every ODI world comp ever.

F**k all anyone had won batting first which meant you were at a clear disadvantage and had to try and rebalance that by putting more runs on the board than had previously won games. A lot more.

In Eng's case, at least part of this was messing with the batting order. Also massively hindered by injuries. And maybe. Just maybe they should have used Roy's injury to bolster the bowling.

Chasing in a final is a lot harder than in a non knockout match. The choke factor is huge. I guess its the same with the bowling side though.

Yes.
The dew factor means Indians dismiss this World Cup: "once the toss has been made, the game is over."
Thus their defeats to Pakistan and NZ.

NZ fly to India next week for three T20s before the two-match test series.
An NZ victory today will give India an immediate chance to rectify the perceived injustice of the coin toss.

Edit: just seen above that we lost the coin toss, so an NZ victory would stuff that Indian claim.
But the upcoming series would still provides them with a chance to restore pride.
