6:46pm: Play has to restart within ten minutes. 6:56 is the cut off time. If it doesn't start by then it's over. But a couple of minutes later, Mike Atherton says intensity's reduced but there is still a steady drizzle.

6:41pm: It's started raining again and the umpires are taking the players off. England are five short at this stage. Remember, there was a delay at the start of play, so we might start losing overs soon. It looks steady, Nasser Hussain says it's the heaviest it has been so far.
oh no! anyway....

7 minutes for it to stop raining and for the covers to be removed or that's it.

Bah.....NZ always seem to get rain draws against sides that they have a good chance of beating for full points.

This is going to benefit Australia bigly.

Congrats Irishers.

Have to say the loss of Bairstow and the need to put Stokes in there has made our batting a little weird. Losing Topley to a freak injury was a huge blow. We have a ton of talent but I just can't see us getting to the final.

Cheers

With hindsight, it was a big blunder to put Ireland in after winning the toss.

It sets us up with a massive game against our Nemisis, the Afghans, on Friday.

Shocking first over from Rabada. Gave up as many runs as we scored in the last 3

Saved by his fellow attackers getting wickets to allow his to return and repair his figures.

61/4 after 9
66/5 after 10
81/7 after 13 still need 125 from 42

2 quick wickets are going to make this squeaky bum time for Pakistan now.

93/5 after 15

but only need 38 from 30

95/6 :wtf:

Pakistan need 29 runs in 19 balls

Pakistan need 20 runs in 11 balls

runout drama, he's in, direct hit and he'd have been tickets!

hip high leg side full toss, 6!

11 from 6
8 and 5
3 and 2
WICKET!!!!
3 and 1

Prospects of play seem pretty bleak. Mate of mine has been in Oz for his honeymoon for the best part of a week now and it's rained every day wherever he's been. Doesn't believe it's 20 degrees at home

8.42pm: "Covers are coming on," reports Alex. Got a feeling this could be terminal. Turn the amps up to 11, folks

8.35pm: Don't look now... it's raining again at the 'G. Aleem Dar has just stuck his umbrella up, which seems symbolic. Alex says the covers remain off, and it was just a small splodge on the radar. But you'd have to think the ground can't take much more of a soaking tonight
8.48pm: Match abandoned, the weather has won another decisive victory in Melbourne. The outfield has been deemed unsafe by the umpires, and this World Cup Ashes clash is toast. Or rather a soggy slice of disappointment. Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood are among those players heading out to take selfies with the crowd, but that is going to be the extent of the action
