The head of the UK government’s legal department has become the latest prominent civil servant to quit, reportedly over its decision to override parts of the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office confirmed Sir Jonathan Jones had resigned but refused to comment further.
On Monday, when it emerged the government was planning to table proposals on Wednesday to give ministers unilateral legal powers to oversee elements of the Northern Ireland protocol, the disclosure provoked widespread disquiet because the agreement is already legally binding.
The FT reported Jones had resigned because of concerns Boris Johnson was trying to overwrite parts of the Brexit agreement relating to Northern Ireland.
A number of senior figures have expressed alarm at the government’s proposals for the bill. The former justice secretary David Gauke said the government would be “taking the most extraordinary risk” if it sought to unilaterally change the protocol through draft legislation due to be published on Wednesday.

I'm pretty certain the departure of another top Civil Servant is pretty much what the Government wants, I'd wager the ultimate goal is to replace the Civil Service with political appointees. Remove another brick from the accountability wall.

Just had the foolishness to look at ‘the other place’ and skim the Brexit thread. Still the usual yah-boo sh1t storm going on. Bimbot seems to have cut down his output to only 30/day and eased up on the worldwide supply issue with laughing emojis but others have stepped up to the plate with one handed typing whilst the other hand is, ahem, otherwise occupied.

Look people need hatred, resentment and anger to get their mean spirited, miserable and low paid behinds out of bed in the morning.
I meet seriously depressed, hateful people all the time who have two jobs and who are just buzzing with anger and are basically working for little more than pride..
Their hatred is so easily manipulated by the right to vote against their own interests..
We are looking over the precipice to some seriously dark places.
We seriously need to hippy the fuck out of the place.
We need a complete change the culture.

Are we to infer then that the rule of law can be broken in an "acceptable" way? Not really sure this is what we should hear from a Justice Secretary, unless we are intent on following Russia's path.

The UK’s new trade deal with Japan commits it to tougher restrictions on state aid than the ones it is currently offering the EU in the Brexit talks, potentially undermining its negotiating position with Brussels.
In the bilateral UK-Japan agreement announced in principle on Friday, London and Tokyo have agreed to replicate the restrictions on subsidies in the EU-Japan deal that went into effect last year. That agreement prohibits the governments from indefinitely guaranteeing the debts of struggling companies or providing an open-ended bailout without a clear restructuring plan in place.
By contrast, the UK has repeatedly told the EU that it must have total freedom over state aid after the end of the Brexit transition period with complete autonomy over future subsidy decisions, subject to WTO rules.

At least 3 Conservative MPs who are thinking of defying Johnson on the bill are being told by whips that if they insist on following the law they will end up as the 'next Dominic Grieve' - "in principle - but out of a job".
I now have confirmation that Boris Johnson / Dominic Cummings have actively threatened Tory MPs with "being expelled from the Conservative Party" if they do not vote for Boris Johnson's law breaking "Internal Market Bill".
Tom Newton Dunn from the 'Times Radio' has now also confirmed that the govt looking at "expelling Tory MPs" who do not back the govt's law breaking...
...this includes former Conservative ministers.
remember of course that Cummings himself is not a Tory party member...

To be fair, as shadow business secretary, Miliband was at the dispatch box because his opposite number the Sec of State Alok Sharma was originally meant to open the debate.
