In Oz, guests weren't catching the virus from staff, it was staff that caught the virus from infected returning travellers. Why would any sporting team tour SA when your country cannot keep them safe?

That Peters story in Auckland was an "alternative truth" designed to garner votes. It failed and he's gone fishing.

We had problems with the Windies and Pakistan squads misbehaving and not following protocols but both sides behaved after a threat of deportation.

Windies tour finishes soon and Pakistan moved out of quarantine yesterday (bar one infected player)

The players can get a test any time they need it. Self isolate for 2 days. Pass. Head to the airport.

Those tests were shown to be false positives and later confirmed as negative. The ECB urged its players to honour its obligations, but citing mental angst, the England players defied their own board.

I'm not sure that the finger-pointing does any good, but the instant acceptance that the blame must lie with the uncouth natives may not be entirely justified.

I just suggested that the knee-jerk reaction to blame the coloured staff of the hotel or typical third-world corruption by the South African authorities bears some looking at and that the situation is not as straightforward an issue of the colonials cocking it up again.

During the English summer the players were required to eat meals wearing rubber gloves. Protocols were brutal and no player suggested otherwise. It was the England players’ request, through the ECB, that the tour took place in Cape Town and that they were based at the Vineyard Hotel. And it was a condition, not a request, that they were allowed to play golf. None of that is unreasonable, but it does point firmly to an ‘agreement’ that a less restrictive ‘bubble’ was required by England’s players before they agreed to tour.

I'm not blaming them. Manthorpe makes it clear that he thinks that asking to be able to play golf is a reasonable request.

What I'm objecting to is the automatic assumption that Africans can't adhere to simple rules because, well, because they're Africans.
