Just need NZ to get as close as possible so the NRR isn't to beaten up.

I have a bad feeling about the Ireland match......they took us pretty close in Dublin!

I thought we were dead and buried. It was something like 57 needed off 30 with NZ pounding us, and it seemed utterly inevitable they'd get there, particularly with Mitchell still waiting to come in. Then the bowlers stepped up and have absolutely strangled NZ. In the end, a huge win by T20 standards, but it did not feel like it for most of the game.

Odd game. Dropped catches aside, pretty high quality. NZ did a great job of keeping a lid on England after failing to take an early wicket. We do bat deep though.

Can't help but feel Stokes is still being shoehorned into the team and it's not working, but he did pick up a useful wicket, even if KW wasn't exactly killing us.

It would have been an absolute killer to lose it after being on top primarly because of that dropped catch by Moeen.

Note: we can still lose it from here.

Sam Curran turning into one of the world's best T20 bowlers, particularly at the death, is mad stuff. He's always had the bollocks for it but his skills and game smarts are so great to watch. Useful bat too!

Hard lines NZ. What does this loss mean? Behind Australia?

Nope, NZ still top the table on NRR. NZ, Eng & Aus are level on 5 points.

Ahead of Oz on NRR and need to beat Sri Lanka.

Excellent game of cricket, was fairly despairing when Williamson and Phillips were together but ended up semi comfortable.

Is it advantage England given that we play last in the last round? Not that we're guaranteed to take the benefit.

Yes I believe the tiebreaker is wins, h2h then NRR so if we beat Sri Lanka we're through regardless of what Australia do to Afghanistan. This is assuming NZ beat Ireland which cannot be taken for granted.

Aus need to absolutely thump Afghanistan, preferably batting first.

It's probably going to come down to NRR for NZ, Aus and England. Aus currently well behind, but their last game is Afghanistan, so a big win could swing things in their favour.

If Aus beat Afghan and we beat Sri Lanka then we'll have the same points, same wins and the H2H is drawn, so it will be NRR, no?

And Aus can get theirs up to 1.568 if they bat first, score 240 and skittle Afghanistan for 100, so we might need a pretty big win too - we're on 0.547.

That no result against Afghanistan is going to hurt NZ. You would have thought that NZ would expect winning points from that match.

Aussie and England getting the no result point for their match looks like it might end up helping them both.

I'm intrigued by how much of a difference batting first can make. Let's assume (just for the sake of argument) that Aus can roll Afghanistan for 120, and can score at 10 an over.

If they bat first they make 200/20 and their NRR goes to 0.796.

If they bat second they make 121/10 and their NRR goes to 0.632.

With England on 0.547 that's a big difference. If England beat SL (big if...) they will probably pass 0.632, but they'll need a pretty big win to pass 0.796.

Though I don't think I understand the H2H rules in the event of a 3 way tie on points... NZ beat Aus but lost to Eng, Eng beat NZ drew with Aus, Aus lost to NZ, drew with Eng, so I suppose that could mean Aus just come third on the basis they are DL compared to WD and WL?

So, wait - H2H counts before NRR? That's a bit weird.

But yeah - from my reckoning you'd have England top (1W/1D), then NZ(1W v Aus, 1L), then Aus. England not having lost to either opponent puts them top. NZ having beat Australia means they 'win' the 2nd place.

TV coverage suggested that it's now England's to lose but I think we've safely established that no one really knows

BBC bring some clarity:
They will qualify for the semi-finals if they beat Sri Lanka on Saturday, as long as Australia do not beat Afghanistan a day earlier and also overturn England's significant net run-rate advantage.

The fact England's match comes 24 hours after Australia helps their cause as they will have a clear picture of any net run-rate requirements going into their final game.

It's astonishingly difficult to find a page just setting out in plan language what the actual rules are, but I'm pretty sure the tie breaker is purely NRR. Can't find any reference to wins or HTH in the endless "how it could end up" articles.

A rather tame capitulation from Zim to lose to the Netherlands this morning,

Ind 140/4 after 16 v Bangers

184/6

Zim literally got their pants pulled down, well for one ball at least.

Neth probably deserved a win in this round for the sustained quality of their bowling throughout the tournament, but they sure need some quality or belief in their middle order batting.

MATCH DELAYED BY RAIN!

"8.57pm Oh wow. It's begun bucketing down now! Litton's charge has put Bangladesh in a beautiful position for just this sort of situation. They're 17 runs ahead of the D/L par! On come the covers."

Some innings from Das

Das was only run out because he slipped on the wet pitch. It doesn't really look safe to play on. What's the betting the match wouldn't have been restarted if India had been ahead on D/L?

Pakistan 68/4 after 10. Rabada gave a few in his last over. Proteas need more wickets.

185/9 - that's a very good total. SA will need to get off to a good start.

4 wickets in last 8 balls, too little too late.

2 wickets immediately after dropped catches.

1/1 after 1 - de kock gone. Game over

65/2 after 7 overs Temba stepping up

meanswhile, 3 balls later.

66/4 fuck shit

and rain...
9.42 pm Drizzle has gotten heavy enough that the covers are being rushed on and the players are coming off. DLS Par score after 9 overs is 85, so South Africa are 16 runs behind at the moment.
