And I'm not sure about the Paralympics measures. I'm definitely leaning towards the ban them all side
Part of Putin's objective is to make the Paralympics more competitive.
Jimmy carr was at least 10 years ahead of you with that joke
Don't tell Guy. It'll be another media source he'll have to resign from on principle.

Wasn't it Frankei Boyle? In both the 2008 Beijing ones and then he rehashed the same jokes, and Rebecca Adlington's got a big nose ones, again at London 2012.

Surely if that si the case, he's already resigned over Carr's gypsy joke in his latest Netflix special?

I think the IPC would have preferred to ban them completely, but because the Paralympics start in two days time, it seems there were concerns about sorting out their legal powers to do at such short notice. This is clearly a compromise measure, but I’m with you; they should have been banned from competing.
Isn't part of the problem that those already there can't get back anyway?

No. Carr's joke (which he originally tested in front of patients at an army rehab hospital where it went down a storm tbf) was about iraq/Afghan vets.
Boyle's was about Saudi chopping hands off thieves. And adlington using a spoon as a mirror

Yea, I suppose the banning of most flights to Russia wouldn't help.
But fuck it, let them watch etc, but let's remove russia from the global scene.
The bullshit news the Russian media is pumping out has been believed by many over there. Let's see how they spin being banned from the Paralympics. People will hopefully start to realise

As already mentioned, sends another message about (or at least causes them to ask questions) what's going on above State controlled media. This came up in my Business of Sport class yesterday, and it works to create awareness on this end too. We're about 50 people, mostly guys and whenever the prof asks if anyone's seen the news, it's crickets. Sport has the power to make many more people take notice.
In discussing it, I couldn't think of a ban this large in recent times. 84' Olympic boycott (in response to the '80 boycott) was all I could think of.

Why would you penalizes these Russians with stupid boycotts?

Interesting piece by a Russian sociologist who was arrested at an anti-war protest in Moscow. Not much opinion is coming out of Russia that reflects how people are feeling. So this is quite rare.

The IPC chanaged their minds
Russian athletes banned from Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics
Athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be permitted to compete in the Winter Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has confirmed.
In a statement, the committee said: "Following a specially convened meeting, the IPC Governing Board has decided to refuse the athlete entries from the RPC and NPC Belarus for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games.
"This means that para-athletes from these respective countries will no longer be allowed to participate in the Games which open on 4 March 2022."
This is a significant shift from the situation yesterday, when the IPC said athletes from the two countries would be allowed to compete, but as neutrals.

The paralympics will be hardly noticed in Russia, it’s not a prominent event. Right action taken, but the football will be noticed much more. World Cup qualifier knockout at the end of this month which won’t be played and Russia out of the World Cup. Showpiece European final scheduled for St Petersburg in May, now moved.

Many Ukrainian athletes and sport stars have been forced to abandon their careers to return home and fight this invasion so I don't see why any Russian should be allowed to carry on as if nothing has happened. High profile sanctions like this are a good way to drive home to the average Russian how much the invasion and their countries leadership are despised.

Just as a preface this is a genuine question and not a shit stir.
If any of the SA posters of the right vintage, can they remember what their feelings were about being excluded from world sport were?

Grew up in the isolation period. I was 11 during the '81 tour to NZ and after that there was total exclusion. The rebel tours were exciting but obviously not the real deal. If you've never had something you don't really know what you're missing. What I can tell you was that our return to international sport was an amazing experience for me. The 1992 cricket world cup, the 1994 inbound All Black tour and the 1995 RWC completely gripped us. The boycott was the right thing for SA it was one of those soft power levers that is very underestimated.
The Russians are going to suffer from this big time. Its like taking away your identity. Making you invisible to the world. But in the long run this is the right thing for Russia. I feel so sorry for the public over there. But it is an opportunity for them to rediscover their proper national identity which has been highjacked by successive regimes over and over.

thanks for the response.
Can I ask, did you question why no-one wanted to play sport against SA?
Apologies if my questions come across as ignorant. It does seem that SA folk would have a good understanding of what its like to live in a pariah regime in the way that Russia is going.

I was in primary school when apartheid ended, so I was very lucky. I can remember before that that local rugby was absolutely massive in those days. Probably still the reason why saffer match freds end up a mess, we just won't back down.

I was in the army 1977/78.
It wasn't if no-one wanted to play sport against us.
Rugby and cricket was amateur back then and we had the rebelle tours. We draw the full All Blacks bar 2 players after their first World Cup win. Ditto Australia cricket team.
It was absolute kak that we were force to do 2 years army and got sport boycotts.
Questioning why? Fuck our era you questioning vokol, you had to just move on.
