I obviously loved his bowling but also remember him for some really belligerent batting near the end of innings. He obviously had the playboy image but a mentally tough fucker as well

Condolences to his family.
I said on the other forum that his ever presence in the commentary box made this even more shocking to wake up to. There was a series of interviews with him a couple of years ago (maybe when cricket was still on 9), that gave a great insight into his career and life. The big thing for me was how humble and engaging he was throughout. He really seemed a guy who despite being a star and loving the spotlight, was genuine in his relationships at every level - and we have seen that in the tributes coming through.
Say what you like but at least my orgasms are real

Utterly stunning news to wake up to. He single-handedly challenged the total dominance of fast bowling as practiced by the WIndies and made spin bowling sexy. A player you watched every ball so you could enjoy the insane level of skill.
He was also an entertaining and informative commentator, pouring back into the game his obvious love for the sport.

When I started at 7.30 in 2011, one person was at the top of my interview wishlist: Warnie. People were always incredulous at this - “Out of everyone on the planet, you want to interview Warnie?” I did because I felt that, except for one interview by Michael Parkinson when Warnie retired, Warnie had never been given a serious in-depth TV interview that treated him properly. He was a genius and historically important cricketer but also something that’s increasingly rare: a true and original character who was unapologetic about who he was. I couldn’t understand why he had never been interviewed with the respect all of that deserved and I really wanted to do it. It took 7 years to make it happen - Warnie didn’t know who I was, he didn’t really get what was in it for him to do it etc etc. Finally it happened in 2018. I opened by saying “Nice to meet you Shane” and he replied “Nice to be met” and from that moment, I knew he would be gold. And he was - smart, charming, interesting, vulnerable, honest. He could be a dick, but he knew it and didn’t try to hide it. I remember in his book, he gave one chapter to his kids to write. You could tell how much they loved him. More than that, they understood him. Their vibe was yes dad has hurt and embarrassed us, but he has also loved us and we love him too. It was very touching. I liked him enormously. Vale Warnie, the country will be less bright and interesting without you, and condolences to his family & friends.

The guy was brilliant. The dedication to do what he did, for wrist spinning. Completely revolutionary.
Had me desperately trying to replicate it with a tennis ball in the yard as a young lad.

Only read about his death today.
As a cricket lover, this is very sad news. My favorite cricketer of all time.
Hard that he was actually quite a decent blood with a great sense of humour.
He also loved South Africa, and considered emigrating.

There was a discussion between several top batsman as to who was the more difficult spinner to face, Warnie or Murali. Of course they thought both exceptional, but they also tended to consider the first few balls from Murali before you were set were much more dangerous, but you could start to rise to the challenge even if it remained really tough, whereas with Warne as one of them put it, the longer Warne bowled at you the more Warne became convinced he was about to get you out, and Warne was still the same danger pretty much whatever number of balls you'd faced and runs scored in an innings

In the spirit of the thread I would like to share my Warnie anecdote. I was out running down near the Brighton Yacht Club and ran past this blond, rich looking bloke in some fancy sunnies. He was just out for a quiet stroll on his own. I was about five metres past him and thought to myself, "Fuck, I think that was Shane Warne."

TBF, I think Aus were there before the Windies in that regard: Thommo, Lillee, Walker and Gilmour (any spin in the attack was incidental) and Lloyd deliberately sought to replicate and exceed it. Also, Qadir was there before Warne in bringing leggies to the attention of TV viewers although without the same on or off field impact Warne had. Definitely the greatest spin bowler ever.

Australian cricket legend Shane Warne's death in Thailand on Friday was from natural causes, police have confirmed.
A senior Thai police official said the post mortem exam showed no signs of foul play in the 52-year-old's death.

According to this article Covid can increase the risk of a heart attack. Warne had Covid twice last year and needed a ventilator first time around..
