That was a stone cold red card, but wasn't.
There was another couple of decisions that swung the game, Leinster destabilised a scrum on the Munster 5m line and got a penalty advantage for it, it led to a further scrum and a try.
A few minutes later a Connacht player dived for the Leinster try line and was met with two seat belt tackles, the decision was a knock on and a scrum to Leinster. That scrum was not stable and a free kick was given to Leinster, who cleared their lines accordingly.
it was a shit show.
Seat belt tackles are ones from behind going over the shoulder, not when a guy dives head first for the line into and through arms which hit each shoulder. There was head contact but the tacklers did nothing wrong, had no chance to react, and were trying to tackle safely. It would have been a travesty if it were penalised - akin to allowing players to headbutt body parts to win a penalty.
I'm not sure that's correct, there is a refs discussion about seatbelt tackles on a forum
here
In any event there was head contact and it's not a defence to say "what else is the defender supposed to do?" because that could be used for any wrongdoing, especially in the red zone where offences are penalised to a greater degree in the form of cards and penalty tries.
Any headbutt would be penalised so that comparison doesn't really work.
Rugby is notoriously difficult to referee and there is a lot of subjectivity involved, which of course the administrators are trying to lessen as much as they can, but it does lead to inconsistency and I think that is what gets everyone's backs up.

Unless I'm missing something that link doesn't make any comment about whether seatbelt tackles are over the shoulder or not. The point in penalising them is because when they're done from behind they're always high and risk pulling the neck/head back. A player diving for the line aiming at arms and hitting them with his shoulders is a world away from that.
We can penalise every instance of head contact if you want..I'm certainly keen on it being stamped out where possible. But that specific situation is exactly the sort of thing that people use as an example of where the letter of the law makes it impossible to avoid.

Huge effort from Bougarrit there. Clearance kick and then the first chaser to get to the receiving player and turns the ball over!
Front row roles have definitely changed.

2 lineout steals in a row. Ulster will want to get that sorted out.

Toulouse have come up with some really effective counterrucking at times.
What a kick from Elstadt!

I keep having to remind myself these games are over two legs.
It appears like a lot of the players haven't yet realized that too

Toulouse really have been the architects of their own downfall. Barely any foot left to shoot.

One aspect of rugby I really don't like is how frequently play gets waved on when a player is down and clearly seriously injured. Whichever player was down there for Toulouse was clearly fucked and play was right next to him. Arguably his being down encouraged Dupont to throw that long over the top ball rather than something shorter.
Think Balacoune's rather lucky to be deemed onside there...

That's big and it's been coming despite a bit of handling sloppiness.
Ulster should be concerned by the way Toulouse have made so much ground going through phases after being a man down since minute 10.

According to Sam Warburton, Exeter represent how the premiership focus on power instead of breakdown skills, which is why the URC sides have fetchers and English teams don't

It's anti-rugby, versus no rugby.

Exeter are probably out now. A win in Thomond will be difficult, especially if you need it to be more than a score.
