Great game from NZ. Always good to see England reverting back to their default setting of shit. Long may it continue!

The Cricket World Cup got off to an embarrassing start for organisers on Thursday with swathes of empty seats for the tournament opener between England and New Zealand.

A strikingly poor crowd were at 134,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium to watch the first ball of the tournament, delivered by Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow.

The venues and dates for World Cup fixtures have repeatedly changed, rendering it impossible for locals – let alone travelling fans – to plan ahead.

Remarkably, only on August 25 – 41 days before the opening match – did World Cup tickets go on sale. Even then, these have often been hard to access, with reports of the ticketing website crashing. In 2019, before the last ODI World Cup in England, tickets went on sale a year before the opening game.

In recent weeks, there has been little attempt to make up for such administrative chaos. On the roads in Ahmedabad, advertising for the World Cup is conspicuous by its absence. Locals have noted there is far more advertising for IPL fixtures – perhaps because these are run by private, for-profit franchises, whereas the World Cup is run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Whenever there are empty seats, ticket prices are raised as an explanation. They are a valid reason for the unwelcome sight in Ahmedabad – and, with poor sales apparent from days out, more innovative thinking would have given thousands of free tickets to school children. Yet ticket prices starting from 1000 rupees ($20NZD) are not egregious. Indeed, expect several thousand fans to work a full day, eschew the early afternoon heat and come later in the game.

I read that this morning, but the article doesn't give any numbers (apart from stadium capacity). How many tickets were sold? How many people actually came through the turnstiles?

Finding crowd stats is a little difficult,

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc ... match-blog
Their unbroken partnership - 273 off 211 balls with 30 fours and eight sixes - sees NZ through with nine wickets and 82 balls to spare inside a 100,000 seater stadium that was maybe one-tenth full.

Wasn’t todays game played in some random backwater? Small crowd without India playing is typical.

The Narendra Modi Stadium is an international cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators.[13][14][15][16] The stadium is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association and serves as the venue for domestic and international cricket matches.[17] It is one of the premier stadiums of India.[18]

I count seven either coming through Dutch youth cricket or having citizenship through parents.

All saffas are Dutch anyway.

Singh at some point needs to get a move on or get out. Nidamanuru and Edwards are excellent batsmen, Zulfiqar an unknown quantity, van Beek is a slogger but can get runs very quickly. I woudln't want edwards getting in with the RRR at >8 RPO.

They're knocking along about a run a ball, that's all that's needed. We know to our cost that de Leede can start smacking it around later on.

They only put the tickets on sale about six weeks ago. So very few travelling fans. And the BCCI hasn’t advertised it - I’m told you see more advertising for the IPL over the last month.

But yeah, India is the spiritual home of cricket, so we can’t criticise them, you can tell they’re all crazy about cricket because the crowds. Um.

They just don’t care about cricket - they care about their team winning. Watching some this morning is just a bit desperate, it feels like a meaningless end of bilateral series game.

I didn’t catch his name but there was an Indian commentator on TMS Thursday commenting on the crowd and going ‘no shock, no home team’, absolutely astonishing really.

You’d think given the tie ups between Indian nationalism and cricket putting on a big show would be really important to their national psyche but clearly not. Just so long as they win the whole thing

Yeah, the final will be in front of an empty stadium if India aren’t in it.

Compare that to the last one in England, every match pretty much sold out.

Fantastic innings by SA. biggest score in CWC ever. But our bowlers have not been the best in recent years. Par score in this stadium is 230 so we will see what our bowlers can do.

The empty seats at the previous games a bit understandable from fickle Indian supporters, but there are far too many empty seats for this one. How is it not a complete sell out?

Aus 26-1

Marsh, trying to emulate his father with a ton on WC debut, falls short by 100 runs.
