That's a real shame. Bar the collapse Afghanistan were far better

We only need to score 240 and skittle SL for 115 to top the group.

To get in the semifinals he meant of course.

Yes, I know - I was playing on the ambiguity of "just". He meant, of course, that England have to win, rather than win and get a particular NRR; but "just" can also imply that it is trivial to win.

And then I was satirising it for my own amusement by working out what highly unlikely scenario would see England top the group and suggesting that was easy too.

Afghanistan, with no wins in the tournament, automatically qualify for the next T20 World Cup.

Ireland, who finish above them in the group and have beaten England, The West Indies and Zimbabwe amongst others, do not.

First ever win by Netherlands over South Africa in any format. Massive performance. Proteas can not qualify for the semis now, the winner of Pak vs Bangla will go through

Corrected

Thank goodness I didn't get up for the game. I am enjoying club cricket a lot more than the Proteas.

Not sure this counts as a choke. They were never in a winning position.

Exceptional game from the Dutch who add another big scalp to their T20WC history; and first time they beat two Test nations in one tournament, I believe. Their pace bowling has been top notch throughout the tournament and finally the batting clicked enough to put up a competitive target. Their fielding has improved out of sight as well.

If Pak and Ind win today, the Dutch will also qualify directly for the next WC and in the process do Ireland and Scotland a huge service (as there are only 2 European qualifying spots so otherwise one of 3 would miss out).

Yep, which is pretty much what the ICC didn’t want. Also means that the qualifying tournaments are all going to be fairly one sided affairs, so the associate sides are going to get very little meaningful cricket. The new system is an utter fucking nonsense which will do the sum total of fuck all to expand cricket or improve playing standards.

Scotland only ICC scheduled games against half decent opposition in the next two years will be a couple of games against Ireland. No others.

Hmmmm. Not India throwing the match so the ICC gets its desired outcome?

I’m hopeful that the evident popularity of England’s ODIs in Holland will be a catalyst for something. A four nations t20 tournament maybe every other summer?

England will never do that. Absolutely no way. They’re not really interested in playing against associates or smaller nations as is evident from the minimal number of times they’ve played them. One ODI v Scotland, plus the mandated ones from the ICC v Netherlands. One test v Ireland (cf to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka playing Bangladesh and Afghanistan). One more scheduled in the next four years. Three home ODIs v Ireland in 2023, three away to Ireland in 2025.

If the ICC actually wanted to do something they could reduce the number of automatic qualifiers for the T20WC drastically and properly buy in to the regional qualifiers.

I stayed up and watched the first hour, writing was on the wall after Radaba's first over - he's been poor all tourny can't understand why he wasn't dropped for Marco. Nortje was superb in a lone effort. (10 for 1 in his 4 over and batted at 400%)

All the top 6 got in and then got out.

Also can't understand why this was only game played so early in the day, when only 1 game was played the day before and 3 scheduled for today. There was nobody in the ground, no atmosphere or support for either team at all, which I think suited Netherlands. Well done to them, automatic quali for the next one as a result.

Stunning catch from Roelof to get Miller.

Luckily I don't watched it.

Jansen for Rabada? Baby AB for Bavuma?

It's never going to happen. Boucher finished on a low. Now we move from bad to worse.

So likely outcomes?

NZ v Pakistan - I don't like the similarities with 92'. NZ coming through well and Pakistan squeaking through.....seems like history to repeat itself? Pakistan have grown into the tourney after a tricky start. NZ have flattened after a good start. Momentum with Pakistan??

India v England - I don't think India or England have played that well. I think England were fortunate that their washout was against Australia so soon after the Irish game. But they dominated NZ and sort of 3rd gear coasted against the remaining teams. India squeaked past Pakistan and lost to a streaky SA side - but key players seem to be very much in form.

So Pakistan to call on the spirit of 92 and England to finally find top gear?

Black Caps choose to bat in Semi Final 1. Let's hope the crazy good version of Pakistan doesn't turn up tonight.
