Outsmarted by South Africans in the boardroom, that must be a killer for Aus and NZ.

PRO16, Rugby Championship ... SA Rugby gets the best of both worlds
By Mike Greenaway Time of article published 4h ago

DURBAN - The revelation that the Springboks have committed to the Rugby Championship for the next 10 years is hugely positive for South African rugby, and with our provincial teams joining the Pro16, it means this country has the best of both worlds.

There are benefits to be had for playing in Europe just as there are positives to maintaining a relationship with world rugby leaders in New Zealand and Australia, so this latest development means South African rugby has a foot in each hemisphere, which should translate into healthy growth.

As SA Rugby boss Jurie Roux pointed out, southern hemisphere countries have won five of the six World Cups that have been held since the game turned professional in 1996, the year that the Tri

Nations was formed (later to become the Rugby Championship when Argentina joined).

I don’t think it is a coincidence that New Zealand, South African and Australia have dominated the World Cup in this period given the fierceness of the competition between the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies, with the Pumas no slouches themselves.

While the Boks are the worthy World Cup holders, the All Blacks consistently set the pace in international rugby – let’s not kid ourselves on this one – and it makes plenty of sense for the Boks to maintain their close association with their traditional rivals.

Meanwhile, the addition of the Bulls, Sharks, Lions and Stormers to the northern hemisphere’s

Pro16 makes sense on a number of fronts – it is geographically a far better option, financially it is substantially more lucrative than Super Rugby and, as the Cheetahs and Kings players will tell you, there are significant nuances the players pick up from playing in different conditions in a different hemisphere.

The Springboks have not played international rugby, since their victory at the Rugby World Cup 12 months ago. COVID-19 forced SA Rugby to pull out of the Rugby Championship, currently taking place in Australia. Their next big assignment is the British and Irish Lions tour taking place here next year. But, loosehead prop Steven Kitshoff is not worried that the...
The fact that the Boks will continue in the Rugby Championship but have ditched Super Rugby is an admission that the one competition remains healthy while the other has slowly and painfully imploded over the last decade, pretty much since the heady days of the exciting Super 12.

Sanzaar’s continued fiddling with the recipe for that competition ultimately killed it off.

It is also exciting that the Championship is to be refreshed without it being expanded. It will remain Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but there will now be 12 home and away games and “mini-tours” as Sanzaar have put it.

It was interesting to hear Sanzaar CEO Andy Marinos say that this news on the Championship is only the beginning, an “important start.”

“This is the first of a number of announcements that will be made over the coming weeks and months as we continue to plan into 2021 and beyond,” Marinos said. “There are some exciting times ahead for rugby in the southern hemisphere as we look to reposition our structure, competitions and future direction as an organisation.”

@IOLsport
People keep going on about the new 12 match format. But how is it different to the old 12 match format which also featured mini tours?
Marino will give details in weeks to come.

Sharks vs Cheetahs is better then Wallabies vs All Blacks 4 weeks in a row.

Four games in a row, not four sequential weeks. Four isn’t too bad - it’s just one more than an old fashioned three test series.

All Blacks B by 60.

It's the same effect now as Springbokke vs Namibia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit rugby in South Africa so badly that SA Rugby was forced into knocking on World Rugby’s door to ask for financial support. According to information from the Rapport all the large unions and even some of the smaller ones were forced into requesting an advance on the annual contributions made to them by SA Rugby.

In effect, SA Rugby has gone to World Rugby and asked them for next year’s stipend now and added that to whatever savings they currently have in order to help the unions survive.

https://www.rugbypass.com/news/south-af ... rld-rugby/
So South Africa pull out of The Rugby Championship, risking the TV and ticket sales revenue of three unions, then walk up to World Rugby hat in hand and expect a hand out? Stay classy

They are financial vandals who have selfishly and recklessly risked the fiscal sustainability of their Rugby Championship based on a dishonest lie about 500 minutes of playing time being required.

Btw what happened to the mythical South African TV money that was supposed to have kept NZ and Australia afloat since the game went pro? South African posters are always boasting about how wealthy the game is in South Africa, yet here we have SARU begging World Rugby for money.

Its not as wealthy as you think. More and more subscribers are ditching DSTV as there really is nothing much to watch on it. Besides Rugby. And you need to buy thr premium package for that...I actually canceled mine because the kids watch Netflix since lockdown and so do I when I get the chance. I asked my sons if they wanted it back last night bearing in mind CC is starting and they said they don't watch anything on it..... I have literally been throwing money away every month on it just for the Rugby. Having never asked my kids what they wanted

Not really a high kick and charge gameplan. We played proper rugby in the final, surprised England and won comfortably in the end, scoring some great tries.

What we are doing now is respecting everyone's health. When the time is right, we will play again. Lives are more important than international rugby. Perspective.
