I can't imagine the Stormers dressing room being a happy place at the moment.

The match wining players, like Tim Swiel, is being paid peanuts when compared to the show ponies like Damian "Wazza Lotta momey I Make" Willemse.

Yep; when I saw the original article that Sards linked was from Keo and Brendan Nel was the author, I was immediately dubious. Those guys have very little credibility, so I qualified my comment with a big "If true..."

Their online mag has plugged Willemse the most. Almost every third article. Thats why Willemse is earning so big. He is completely over exposed in their press. Probably because they are trolls and Willemse is excellent click bait for their mag. They created the monster...now they want to complain about his earnings....surprised me

Former skippers Juan de Jongh and Deon Fourie re-sign with WP
By Wynona Louw Time of article published 3h ago

CAPE TOWN — Currie Cup-winning captains Juan de Jongh and Deon Fourie have both signed contracts with Western Province Professional Rugby (WPPR) and will make their return to Cape Town in July.

Springbok centre De Jongh, who lifted the Currie Cup at Newlands in 2014, will boost the Stormers’ midfield stocks. The 33-year-old boasts 97 Stormers caps and 59 appearances for Western Province. He moved to English Premiership side Wasps in 2017.

The experienced centre also has 19 Test caps for the Springboks and represented the Springbok Sevens team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Fourie, who can play both hooker and in the loose trio, led the WP to the Currie Cup title in 2012 and has been playing in France since leaving the Cape in 2014. He has amassed 84 Stormers caps and 90 for WP.

De Jongh, who hails from Wellington, said he can’t wait to get back where it all started for him.

"Playing for the Stormers and Western Province was a dream of mine from a young age and I am thrilled to be returning to where it all started for me.

"I feel that I have a lot to add and there is much that I can achieve here with the current coaching staff and players.

"I was lucky enough to learn from some legends of the game when I was first making my way and I am excited about contributing in any way I can to taking these teams to the next level," he said.

Fourie said that he is excited to be joining a squad that combines international quality, experience and young blood.

"There is a formidable group of players here, combining international quality and experience with plenty of young talent, so I can't wait to get involved.

"It will be an honour to pull the Stormers and Western Province jerseys on again and I will be giving everything for these teams in my second debut season," he said.

Stormers head coach John Dobson gave some background into the duo’s recruitment.

"Juan and Deon are both legends who achieved much in their time here, but we wouldn't have signed them if we hadn't been impressed with the rugby they have been playing.

"These are two tough players who we know will play their hearts out for the jersey and our faithful fans and we are looking forward to seeing what they will add in the upcoming campaigns," he said.

My criticism of Stormers utility back Damian Willemse’s annual salary was based on the player’s indifferent form in the context of a professional franchise that is under major financial duress. To try and make it a case of racism is seeing ghosts in every shadow.

I reacted to a story I read in the Rapport Newspaper that named Willemse. And that story’s facts are accurate.

I certainly did not go looking for Damian Willemse’s salary or single out Willemse from nowhere.

The player’s name led the back page of last Sunday’s Rapport Newspaper, in which the article condemned the nature of how WP, as a union, was conducting its financial affairs. The article in question referenced Willemse’s salary as one example of over expenditure.

The standard in professional sport is to hold every player accountable for their performance. Not holding a player accountable to that standard because they are a player of colour in this country, is not only insulting the player’s sporting quality but the very definition of prejudice and racism.
Give Willemse a bar increase ffs....any player of his quality that can demand such a salary and have such a social media following deserves a bonus

BREAKING NEWS: Junaid Moerat has won the first round in his protracted battle with Western Province Rugby Football Union President Zelt Marais.

Moerat and his lawyers were successful in getting an interdict against the Marais-led WPRFU, after filing an urgent application in the High Court of South Africa: Western Cape Division.

Moerat, a former candidate for the CEO position of the union’s professional arm (WP Professional Rugby Pty Ltd), was suspended in February this year.

His disciplinary hearing, postponed several times, was scheduled to proceed on Thursday.

However, Moerat’s lawyers had challenged the legitimacy of the disciplinary process and after a breakdown in communication between the two parties turned to the high court to prevent the hearing from going ahead.

Judge Andre le Grange ruled in favour of Moerat – who was represented by Shaheid Schreuder and advocate Ross Randal.

Randal Titus represented Marais and the WPRFU.

The Judge, Le Grange, in his ruling said: “… the responded is interdicted from taking any further steps/prosecuting the disciplinary proceedings instituted against the applicant by the respondents on 17 February 2021.”

The hearing of the case – whether the process is legitimate or not – has been placed on the ‘semi-urgent’ roll for Thursday, August 26 this year.

It is a massive blow for the cash-strapped WPRFU – who has already spent more than ZAR3-million in legal fees in two years – ZAR940,051 in 2019 and ZAR2,195,340 in 2020.

The fees for the last six months – which include the much-publicised Flyt/Dreamworld stand-off – are likely to add a substantial amount to those figures.

Marais, in response to a @rugby365com request for reaction, expressed his disappointment in the turn of events.

“As a Union, we [WPRFU] are of course disappointed by the developments of today [Thursday],” Marais told this website.

“We are disappointed because Mr Moerat’s court application to stay the disciplinary proceedings against him and to indeed challenge the very validity of the union’s disciplinary processes now simply delays those proceedings yet again.

“Whilst we have sought to finalise Mr Moerat’s disciplinary proceedings internally at the earliest opportunity, we are now instead dragged to court in order to deal with Mr Moerat’s application.

“We have every confidence that, once the matter is fully ventilated, the court will vindicate our internal disciplinary processes and that we will be able to, in due course, finalise the disciplinary proceedings against Mr Moerat.”

WPRFU: The witch-hunt and those mysterious letters
SAT 28 AUG 2021 | 11:05
WPRFU: THE WITCH-HUNT AND THOSE MYSTERIOUS LETTERS
Jan de KoningJAN DE KONINGR365 EDITOR CONTACT JAN
UPDATE: The Western Province Rugby Football Union boardroom saga took an intriguing and sinister twist at the weekend, with claims of a witch-hunt and allegations of the spreading of misinformation.

The latest developments follow the fractious and often chaotic WPRFU general council meeting this past week, in which the union President Zelt Marais came under fire for acting in direct conflict to the instructions of a WPRFU/SA Rugby advisory committee on which he serves.

The six-man WPRFU/SA Rugby advisory committee consists of Marais, Patrick Kuhn, Samuel Ngumeni, Abubakar Saban, Ebrahim Rasool and Colin Moses.

It transpired that certain documentation – the minutes of an advisory committee meeting held last Saturday, August 21 – caused considerable discord in this past Thursday’s meeting.

Marais, who was tasked with distributing the document, became very defensive and claimed he wanted an ‘amendment’ to the document before passing it on to council members.

However, the document was ‘released’ to constituents through informal channels, a move that riled Marais and caused some heated debate.

It has transpired over the weekend that a concerted effort was made to find the source of the ‘leak’ – a move reportedly driven by the Marais camp, which it appears is opposed to a proposal to accept a deal that will see Staytus Cape (Pty) Ltd become the union’s new benefactor.

@rugby365com can reveal that Rasool, the Chairman of WP Professional Rugby, is the man who distributed the document Marais wanted to keep away from last week’s meeting.

On Saturday the man in charge of the professional arm of the union, Rasool, came out swinging and suggested he could not stand by and watch the union going to ruins.

While Marais opted for the ‘it is sub judice’ stance in his formal response, Rasool spoke freely to this website about the dramatic events of the past week.

“The salient matters are sub judice and by extension, the associated matters with regards to Staytus are encumbered by the sub judice status/rule until otherwise advised,” Marais said in response to a series of questions posed by @rugby365com.

“The affairs of WPRFU remain strictly subject to corporate governance practices, the approval by the ultimate shareholders, namely the General Council, and also in consultation with the joint SARU/WP advisory committee,” he added.

Unlike Marais, Rasool opened up about aspects such as the ‘leak’ and his reasons behind making the document available to the clubs.

WPRFU-SARU-instruction-to-Zelt-Marais-2

He accused Marais of ‘deliberately’ withholding valuable information from the clubs.

“I take responsibility for distributing it,” Rasool said of the letter from the WPRFU/SA Rugby advisory committee meeting last Saturday.

At the meeting – attended by the members of the WPRFU executive committee and the members of WPPR – Staytus Cape (Pty) Ltd put forward their proposal for an ‘urgent’ out of court settlement with Flyt/Dream World.

The advisory committee following a meeting in the wake of the presentation, “requested” that the two-page letter and recommendation that the Staytus deal must be accepted, should be distributed to the members of the WPRFU general council.

Marais was tasked with this ‘assignment’.

However, Rasool said this never happened and he felt it was a deliberate act by Marais.

“The six people on the advisory committee – which included Zelt Marais – unanimously decided to support the deal,” Rasool told @rugby365com.

“The letter and its content were also accepted by the committee. Marais raised no concerns at the meeting.

“It was decided to distribute the letter to the clubs so they have the information and can make up their own minds.”

Rasool also revealed the events surrounding this past Thursday’s problematical WPRFU general council meeting that caused such an uproar and is now the source of a ‘witch-hunt’.

Advisory-committee-brief

“We [the advisory committee] decided that Staytus must be afforded the opportunity to make a presentation at the general council meeting and the SA Rugby members of the advisory committee should also be present.

“The letter with the SA Rugby recommendation has to be put forward to the meeting.

“However, two hours before [this past] Thursday’s general council meeting I had not even received my invite to the meeting – neither did the Staytus representatives, nor the SA Rugby members.

“And by 5pm [17.00, just hours before the meeting] I found out the letter [from the advisory committee] was not distributed either, despite our unanimous decision.

“Staytus was not even aware they had to make a presentation to the meeting.”

The WPPR Chairman said he took it upon himself to rectify matters and started getting invites and links to the zoom meeting out to the various parties.

Staytus-offer-to-Flyt

“As one of the interested parties, I decided this could not be tolerated and gave an instruction to the company’s secretary to send the invites to the SA Rugby members and Staytus representatives.

“I also did my best to get the WPRFU/SA Rugby [advisory committee] letter through to as many clubs as possible to inform them of the committee’s decision to support the Staytus offer.

“There was a deliberate attempt to withhold information and as a member of the WPRFU/SA Rugby advisory committee I believed the clubs must have the benefit of having access to the WPRFU/SA Rugby proposal to vote in favour of the Staytus offer.”

Rasool reiterated his belief that Marais unilaterally decided not to distribute the letter of recommendation for Staytus, despite being part of the unanimous decision and being tasked to do so.

“Later on he [Marais] said he was not happy with a single clause in the letter, despite earlier agreeing to it,” Rasool said.

“As far as I am concerned, it was my responsibility to fulfil the decision to invite all the committee members and Staytus representatives to the meeting as well as ensuring the letter is distributed.

“I acted according to my conscience, as I would have been guilty of ‘reckless business practices’.

“I just could not idly stand by while ‘Rome burns’.

“I did what needed to be done.”

Marais, in stark contrast to the instructions of the advisory committee to forward their letter in support of the deal, distributed a document from the lawyers Korbers Incorporated – which is advising against accepting the deal.

It is worth noting that Korbers are also litigating for the WPRFU against Flyt.

The WPRFU legal bill for 2021 has already exceeded ZAR3-million.
Sjoe, it is a mess.
