Marais reportedly refused to leave the meeting and demanded that clubs showed him the minutes of the meeting where they decided to hold a vote of no confidence. Marais further apparently threatened to place clubs into administration.

According to the report, the chaos at the meeting got to the point that club representatives started walking out.

BREAKING NEWS: The Western Province Rugby Football Union executive committee dropped a massive legal bomb on the union’s President, Zelt Marais.

@rugby365com can reveal that Marais will face his accusers – five members of his own ExCo – in the Cape High Court on Thursday, September 23.

In documents filed on Tuesday, the five – vice-president Ronald Bantom, Reuben Riffel, Quintin van Rooyen, Mario Williams and Anele Zita – ask the court to remove Marais from office.

In the urgent application, they accuse Marais of making unilateral decisions with contract negotiations, failing or refusing to execute and implement regulations of the WPRFU ExCo and council and withholding information from members of ExCo and the council.

They also accuse him of being ‘in breach of his fiduciary duties’ and that he is ‘delinquent’.

The latest in the ever-escalating stand-off between Marais and members of his ExCo, follows the fractious and acrimonious developments of the last few months.

This week alone Marais avoided a ‘vote of no confidence‘ from the clubs with a gladiatorial stance at a meeting he chaired – even though delegates argued he should not chair a meeting in which he is accused of wrongdoing.

According to information provided to @rugby365, the vote could not take place as there was fighting over technicalities and letters from clubs were not even tabled.

It was revealed that Marais refused to leave Monday’s gathering and he requested clubs to show minutes of the meetings where they agreed to have a vote of no confidence in him.

Marais also threatened to put clubs under administration.

Over the weekend, Ebrahim Rasool, Chairman of the board of WP Professional Rugby (Pty) Ltd, accused Marais of “megalomania” and having centralized all power in his person – as President of WPRFU, board member of WPPR, acting CEO of WPRFU, head of the finance committee and also the leader of a newly-formed War Room.

In another development this past weekend Peter Jooste became the latest member of the executive committee to hand in his resignation.

Jooste, who ran for President against Marais in 2018, handed in his resignation last Friday.

In the reasons for his resignation, Jooste said the ongoing infighting is at the heart of his decision.

Williams last Friday lost a court battle against Marais – when he sought an interdict to set aside his suspension – and has to face a WPRFU disciplinary hearing on Thursday, September 23.

Williams is charged with allegedly ‘disseminating confidential financial and commercial information’ of the now-disbanded WPRFU/SARU joint advisory committee.

The charges against the executive member, that resulted in his suspension – pending next Thursday’s hearing – relates to messages he send on the social media platform WhatsApp in which he criticised Marais.

It is unclear if Williams’ hearing on Thursday will go ahead if the ExCo members win their case against Marais.

Marais has been at the centre of three failed loan agreements – with Remgro, Investec and Flyt/Dream World – with has left the union with growing dept and their properties bonded to the Flyt group.

Marais’ behaviour also caused the South African Rugby Union to step away from and disbanding a joint WPRFU-SARU advisory committee.

The national body threatened the WPRFU with invoking clause 28 of the constitution and placing the union under administration.

It is clear from the court documents that his executive committee feels that Marais has overstepped his bounds.

Should WP go into administration, the first step would be to suspend funding to the union and then to suspend the WPRFU as a member of SA Rugby.

SA Rugby would then remove all WPRFU’s governance structures and appoint an administrator who would ensure the day-to-day running of the union goes smoothly, that decisions were made in the best interests of the union, and develop a business rescue plan if needed
WP were warned and Marais had to make a huge issue at his impeachment. Ending proceedings with no result. Now SARU are crossing the t's and dotting the i's before moving onto the above....

Our struggles as a rugby power really encompass every level of competition above school level. At this stage I feel like we should be looking to actively export every young prospect to a foreign league and then exclusively pick the Boks from that pool of players. And get a foreign coach! And its got nothing to do with transformation or the ANC. SA domestic rugby has a long and embarrassing history of turds stinking up the administration. Louis Luyt, Nic Labuschagne and Keith Parkinson at the Sharks, Zelt Marais, Cheeky Watson and the EP mob, Jurie Roux who was caught in a R37 million financial scandal at Maties. And God knows what Broederbond, Boere Mafia antics went on in the other unions prior to 1994.

I like what's happened at the Sharks. Having a Wall Street corporate law wizard involved should hopefully keep the skelms under control. Masotti has enough nous to keep them on the right track. And while we're at it, time to have fully professional clubs who are at arms length from the provincial unions.

I just don't get Marais. SARU laid out detailed steps that were going to be followed if the union didn't get in line. Threats were made....this tool just goes ahead and causes havoc at his impeachment threatening clubs to withdraw funding like he is the God. Incurring the full wrath of SARU knowingly...a big vok you....
How deep is his connection to the sale that he is fighting so hard to keep control of the process. Surely the investors realize they are betting on a dying horse....

Playing for the WP / Stormers drove Siya Kolisi to drink

In his soon-be-released autobiography, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has recalled his battle with alcohol and how it almost cost him his family.

In the book, Rise, Kolisi details his successes in rugby and life, his tough upbringing in the township near Gqeberha, as well as his battle with substance abuse

Kolisi made his Springbok debut in 2013 and became the country's first black captain in 2018.

Under his leadership, the Boks won the 2019 Rugby World Cup and also beat the British & Irish Lions 2-1 in a series this year.

However, his time with the Springboks' hadn't always been rosy and in the book he recalls the shame of how he conducted himself around the period of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Kolisi wasn't a regular started in the Bok team for that World Cup in England and he now looks back embarrassed at the way he acted.

"Whenever I had time off, I just drank. I was bored and feeling sorry for myself, there were other guys around in the same boat who were always happy to hang out, and it was all too easy for me to hit the bars and pubs and be a good-time guy," he wrote in an extract published by the Sunday Times.

"Rachel [my wife] had come out with baby Nick, and this would have been the perfect opportunity to spend some time with them; but no, I preferred to be out with the boys. It was an awful time for her, and I was too selfish to realise. In the end Rachel got fed up with me being a jerk and flew home a week early."

Kolisi recalled an incident back home that helped him realise he needed to change his behaviour.

"A few weeks after the World Cup had ended and we were back home, I was lying on the grass on a Sunday morning, as hungover as it's possible to imagine. My eyes were bloodshot and I stank of alcohol. 'This is how you look when you’ve been bad,' Liphelo, the sister whom I had adopted, said. She was six at the time, the perfect age for a child to tell you a home truth without even realising that they're doing so.

"Rachel had had enough. If it had been an isolated incident that would have been one thing, but it wasn't. It could have been the week before, or the week before that, or the week before that. 'We're going to church,' she said. She always went to church on Sunday. 'See you later,' I grunted. 'We,' she said. 'We're going to church. That means you too.' She was right, and I knew it. The trajectory of my life was bad. I had to stop behaving like this or else I'd lose my family. It wasn't 'stop drinking', because drinking would have been fine if I'd just had a couple of beers and stopped there. It was 'stop drinking until you're obliterated, each and every time'. Because that's what I was. Whenever I opened a drink it was as though there was a message at the bottom of the bottle saying 'drink me, keep on going'. I'd binge and not remember what had happened the night before.

"Picking up the pieces of the story from other people was fun for a while - 'Ag! Man, you'll never believe what you did, you were so wasted' - but I'd soon begun to tire of it and think that there must be more to life than this
."

I see SARU are now gatvol and stepping in. Riaan Oberholzer to wield the lat. All trolling aside, WP is my home and my second team. Its schools, clubs and varsities are the best rugby nurseries in the country. Strong WP equals strong national game. I support my local club False Bay Rugby with my annual fees and watched the Southern Suburb schools rugby games live with my daughters. Its enough that the rest of the country is fucked, time to take back rugby!
