States the obvious perhaps, but the new ball looks to be pretty important on this pitch.

It's always a double edged sword, it can go for runs pretty quickly

Just had a look at the spell lengths from the 1st Aussie innings - very interesting*, the longest spell by a quick was 5 overs. My recollection was that 7 over spells or even longer were quite common not long ago.

Code: Select all

	1st spell	2nd spell	3rd spell	4th spell	5th spell	6th spell	7th spell	Total
Broad		4		2		4		4							14
Anderson	4		4		5		3		1		3			20
Woakes		5		5		2		3		2		2		4	23
Wood		4		5		5		2		1					17
Ali		2		9		6									17
														Total	91
* yes, yes...

This is great stuff. The Aussies are heading towards the ignominy of losing after a 2 nil lead in a Test series. Sure this has never happened in the Ashes but struggling to think if has ever happened in a 5 match series. Windies won against Eng in 90 but the 2nd Test was abandoned rather than lost.

I wish I had confidence we’re going to get the c.40 overs we’ll likely need to finish this off given the forecast. Nail every cover in Lancashire to that ground tonight.

I think you are worrying unnecessarily. Aus won't last 50 overs and the forecast allows enough for that (with any added time).

On another note, Smith and Head once again show that modern batsmen are clueless against the short ball (off a genuine quick).

Fully agree on the short ball. Head’s in many ways is more criminal - a top order international should not be left looking like that by a telegraphed bouncer. What a difference Wood makes, and a genuine character as well which is always great to see

The Aussies deserve to lose this series purely because they're playing such awful, negative cricket. This 7/8/9 men on the boundary shit is just a symptom of a complete lack of ideas on how to play England when they bat aggressively. It's dreadful stuff. I can't imagine Border, Taylor or Ponting having so little imagination.

Well to be fair to Bob Willis, he did an OK job. 18 Tests as England captain with 7 wins, 5 losses, and 6 draws, 29 ODI matches, winning 16 and losing 13. Not great but not terrible either. Maybe it depends as much on the other senior players you have around you.

Some poor batting at the top of the order from Scotland, looked to me that they had come out with the intention of hitting 240, rather than looking to start towards 180 and take it from there. Good bowling in the end made the win, two wins from two for Scotland, four games to play. Sell out crowd for next Friday vs Ireland.
