I have a labradoodle and can confirm they eat pretty much anything you put their way. His relationship with my 8 and 5 year olds is a beautiful thing. They feed him the veg they don't want and he gives them all the love and attention they can handle

Ridge backs are lovely dogs but be wary they can be overly protective we had friends that had to have theirs put down as is couldn’t distinguish between children playing with friends and needing to protect them

we have had 6 ridgebacks now and they have all been superb with kids. their character trait is to be aloof and usually when faced with a trouble kid they simply remove themselves

Pot luck I guess also my Wife's Ridgeback in Botswana was very much the guard dog rather than family pet.

Handy suppose you have space. No better dog then a Border Collie for kids. Bitches is always the best for guard. I had two and wont never want another breed.

Border Collies can be a bit nippy…

Especially if your kids don't want to walk as a flock and follow orders

Had a half breed. Still remember her hair raising on her spine as someone would ring the bell. The would grawl and bark and as soon as I would open the door, she would be the guest's best friend

Surprisingly good with kids and very obedient. Quite, she doesn't bark. But you can't get in if you are not allowed in.

The family prefers a labrador, but I'm weary of the first 2 years, I've heard they can be quite troublesome.

What did you go for in the end? This lad is 18 months now and other than the first couple of months it has been fairly easy (Mrs may disagree a bit). He's never chewed anything he shouldn't, well maybe me the odd time, and he's a bit pully/excitable on the lead in new environments but overall he's a braw dug.

A friend of mine has Mastiff/ Molloser (sp?) type dogs. He had one that was a Cane Corso/Great Dane Cross. It was like a pony. Pure black and drop dead gorgeous.

It was the friendliest, most supine dog I've ever encountered, it always lay down in front of other dogs, which is probably just as well as it most likely weighed in close to the 100kg mark and was ridiculously strong. It had lion paws.

My then 8 year old daughter loved that dog, and it seemed to be that the dog was particularly gentle around her, it dwarfed her but would follow her around when we went walking in the woods.

My young lad (7) would love us to get a dog but he's allergic to them as are mum and dad to a lesser extent. We fill the gap by giving him loads of time with my wife's sister's two terriers.

How do other dog owners manage allergies?

Having a non shedding dog helps try googling hypoallergenic dogs there is a load of info out there.
I have a Cavapoo and she doesn't cause allergic reactions in friends who sometimes react to dogs

Basically anything " . . . oodle" will get you there. We have a labradoodle who is non shedding and hypoallergenic. It's not 100% but we never have to clean fur/hair up. My mate, who is allergic to dogs has one too. Oddly enough sometimes his dog still sets them off but rarely. The nice thing about the oodles is that they come in multitudes of types and sizes, depending on the Poodle size. The Bermdoodles are the best looking.

One thing to note, it is not guaranteed they are non shedding. Too much of the 'other' breed and you may be unlucky.

Same as Greyhound trainers - one just got busted for killing 3 with a shovel.

I had to stop picking up from trainers for the Rescue as I was getting to angry at the state of some of the rescues.
