Amazing. I genuinely have about 15 miles of fuel left in the car. Stations are all expecting deliveries tomorrow morning - so I contacted my boss - told him that I would stay at home today and he said that was fine 'We've being doing home working for the last year and a half - so what is another day'. When then had a great chat about the Ryder Cup and the Rugby.

That is how sensible people react to a situation like this.

I always thought that movies like Mad Max were overblown hype for Hollywood - but we as a society would be there within a few months of a real global disaster.

Farm worker shortage will cause panic buying again. Well I'm not getting caught out in late November and unable to get a turkey for Xmas day. I'm buying a frozen one from M&S today and chucking it into the freezer.

Do any of you "prep" a wee bit? I come from a farming family and am used to having a shit load of diesel, reloading my ammo, having craploads of food available. I now live in an urban environment and don't spazz out but I have a couple of jerry cans in the garage. Try to keep my vehicle tanks full and have a decent supply of staples in the house. I don't trust this pull based supply system. Whether its South Africa or London I think the Boy Scouts motto applies. Have a hundred toilet rolls, 5 gallons of fuel and 50 pounds of rice and lentils is sensible and not paranoid imo. On the food side I just tend to buy a bit more rice and dried food. And then eat and replenish as needed. After the South African riot and looting episode I no longer think its a paranoid idea.

Dilemma - my wife’s car is running on fumes (as per normal) so do I go to one of the local petrol stations to fill up (or as close to it as I’m allowed) and be branded a panic buyer as I sit in a queue, or do I let her get her own fecking fuel?

I was reading elsewhere that due to pandemic steel mills were closed for quite a while and lead to a shortage of metal for canned tomatoes in Spain and Italy. So you all better get stocked up on those before they announce there will be a shortage.

Jesus Christ. a hundred toilet rolls? What the fuck for? Do you need to dry your fanny after taking a piss? If you've lived on a farm, you'll know how excessive toilet paper clogs up a septic tank. Presuming you didn't have to use a long drop.

To digress, I spent a few years in South-West (Namibia) prospecting for Uranium and one of the pleasures that will always remain with me is sitting on the longdrop looking out over the plains and taking a nice long shit.

In the SADF we called it a Go Cart. It was like a little fibre glass potty. A place to talk kak an have a communal shit with a few other lads while smoking Gunstons. During the brief rainy season in Lohatla in NC or Grootfontein in SWA or wherever we where stationed it would become unbearable with flies.
The best view was at Mpacha in Caprivi from the Officers long drop which was a bit elevated and you could see the odd giraffe.

The Government had knocked the idea of using the army on the head (as of the lunchtime news), but I suspect your right as to their usefulness. Even if they have a HGV license; would they have relevant hazardous materials experience ?

Well, instead of choosing to retain a dedicated fuel tank and pump locally in a depot as they were offered, our waste collection service contractors decided to rely on a Keyfuels fuel card at public fuel stations...with now predictable results.
