I believe it was German soldiers looking over ruskies they had just slaughtered
No, it's Katyn.
The NKVD killed several thousand Polish officers, intelligentsia, etc.
The Germans tried to use it as a diplomatic coup against the West, to try and get them to stop supplying the USSR with weapons. They invited the Red Cross and other international observers to the site. Stalin denied it of course, and everyone knew they did it but the Brits and Americans had no choice but to ignore it.

Not a picture (but does contain lots of military video), but here's a song from late USSR period. It's called "Don't tell mom I'm in Afghanistan" - this refers to young conscripts telling their moms they were on a normal duty, because Afghanistan was the most dangerous place to be and they didn't want their mother to worry.

The Battle of the Shaggy Ridge was part of the Finisterre Range campaign, consisting of a number of actions fought by Australian and Japanese troops in Papua New Guinea in World War II.

That campaign in Papua New Guinea was horrible. Well worth reading up on.

I read a superb book on the Russians in Afghanistan called Afgansty just before Christmas - mentions this phenomenon a few times. Highly recommended.

Very old pic but shows why a bit of Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt was so scary.
Every time I hear about how the fly boys were dead set on getting the A-10 cancelled, I get angrier & angrier.
There are probably thousands of soldiers & marines alive today because of the A-10; & the idea the F35, or any other fucking fighter, is going to come remotely close to useful, as a Close-Air-Support platform; is so cretinous, as to be frankly insulting, to this generation of soldiers & marines.
All an F35 will do in CAS, is kill friendlies.

Someone in the comments says he flings up a Naxi salute just before this clip starts. Air Commodore Darvall having none of it.

Agree. One of the most f**kwitted decisions in a long history of f**kwitted military decisions. A quite extraordinary weapons platform.

Just watching a PBS Documentary I recorded, called "The Codebreaker", about Elizebeth Smith Friedman; remarkable woman.
The Mob put a contract out on her during prohibition, as she was the expert who cracked Capones coded messages; & she was the critical witness
This is a photo of the 1st group of recuits, she & her husband trained in breaking encrypted messages. They encoded a message in the photo; can you even tell what the method is ?, never mind read the message

At a quick glance I'd say the way they're looking?

I find the message easier = no matter how many times you tell the team that we're taking the photo with our hands behind our backs there's always some doppy contrarian twat that doesn't do it.

You're close !
Do you notice how they're split into looking straight at the camera, & gazing off to one side or the other ?

correctomondo !
William and Elizebeth Smith Friedman met in a very odd effort, by a millionaire to prove that Francis Bacon was the actual writer of the works attributed to Shakespeare.
The effort was to see if there was a hidden message; using Bacons own encryption method; in a Shakespeare first folio.
In the Picture; they used the Bacon encryption, to hide the message; "Knowledge is Power"
Bacon's encryption, is a simple 5-Digit binary system
Decimal Binary Letter
0 00000 A
1 00001 B
2 00010 C
3 00011 D
...

The A10 is toast against any modern adversary though. Roughly handled by the better equipped Iraq formations in DS.
F35 with standoff/loiter munitions actually stands a chance in a peer war.
