Scum. Absolute scum.
I’ve also heard that the following have been attacked or destroyed:
Game farm fences
Reservoir
Cane fields set on fire
Fire engines

Crazy scenes, and the ones who will suffer the most are likely to be the perpetrators.
Wonder if the number of deaths is accurately reported ?
The story about Hluhluwe fences destroyed is fake news.

Too little, too late. It's like phoning the police when there's armed robbers trying to break into your house vs you heard your neighbour beating his wife again. The one you'll be lucky to see them the next day the other they're there within minutes.

With something like this you need to deploy counter measures within the hour not after a whole fokon weekend of looting.

The story came to me by voice message.

I don't know the person sending the message personally, but he sounded white and possibly in his late thirties/early forties.

It's possible that he saw looters who were lying face down after being arrested: I certainly have seen video footage of looters lying prone with their hands tied with cable ties in a Makro parking lot.

Nottingham Road is off limits this morning with road blocks preventing people from going in.

According to another voice message (this time on the Lotini Road Farmer's whatapp group for Nipper's information) the looters were pretty subdued after consuming the contents of the Liguor store yesterday afternoon. In any case, a reasonably quiet night.

I'm hearing that things have been pretty bad on the South Coast, but I have no personal first hand information on that. Stories about the cops running out of ammo, but again, nothing first-hand.

What I do know (because my dad used to farm outside of Port Shepstone) is that the areas around Harding and Highflats are hotbeds for riotous behaviour from ANC (and presumably Zuma) supporters.

I am appalled by the destruction of property and the lawless nature of these protests, and more at the instigators on social media (take Zuma's daughters for example). It should not happen in our country, or any other country, and I hope order is restored soon. However, it does not condone Rinkhals posting blatantly fake news he heard on a whatsapp group. What was the purpose of that?

My sister and family travelled from Kosi Bay to Hluhluwe yesterday. Now at a friend's game farm. The locals know that those fences are keeping the lions, elephant etc out of their villages.

Those fences are also not the plaas draad from Oom Kallie's plaas in the Free State. It is going to be quite a mission to pull down fences meant to keep out elephant

The community is one of dozens throughout the province setting up civilian patrols and working alongside police as a stopgap before the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) finally gets to Durban.

“When we did a patrol earlier today… the people walking around who had done the looting… it was unbelievable. We don’t want another Marikana, but the issue with the SAPS is they are completely undermanned, overworked and overwhelmed,” Glenwood Community Watch coordinator Guy Perrins told the 80-strong crowd.

“It all depends on us now. It is up to us to respond. We have agreed with [the Umbilo police station] to [set up] an interim stopgap to contain the violence, looting and criminality until the army can take over. This is only a temporary solution.”

Perrins asked that those carrying legal weapons, and who were prepared to patrol with the SAPS on Monday night, stand to one side.

“We are going to support SAPS. You will be shocked [that] there are only eight officers available tonight for the whole sector. I can’t go into detail.

“They want the armed guys to meet at the [Umbilo police station] and patrol and work under the jurisdiction of the SAPS. We will take direct instruction from the SAPS.”

Those without firearms were asked to be part of community patrols, working in two-hour shifts.

Perrins emphasised that the civilians would be “back-up” for the police. “We will not be standing at the front. We will not be frontline. We are at the back to support only. It is as simple as that.”

...

Liquor stores appear to be the favoured target for the looters in all of the areas.

It looks more to me like the looter walking from the right was going to beat the box (I thought it was a person at first but zoomed in, looks like a till or something you’d try to whack open), and accidentally forgot about gravity and got 30ft of karma.

Nipper I don't think these can be characterized as protests at all. The kleptocratic network that the captured Zuma state patronized has sprung into action and is using the poor as pawns once again. Once the communities realize that they've been duped and have only shat their own nest they'll turn on these motherfuckers.

I'm reading it as they were trying to smash the window so that they could pass the looted goods down and the one guy overbalances and falls out. Doesn't seem to phase the other guy, though: he just picks up his bag and strolls away.

In Durban North the residents blocked off all entrances to the suburb with their vehicles. One of my mates fired 200 warning shots at the top of a street leading up from North Coast Road.

It should not happen in our country, or any other country, and I hope order is restored soon. However, it does not condone Rinkhals posting blatantly fake news he heard on a whatsapp group. What was the purpose of that?
Wonder if they can be charged with Incitement of violence?

To send a message to the instigators
Nipper I don't think these can be characterized as protests at all. The kleptocratic network that the captured Zuma state patronized has sprung into action and is using the poor as pawns once again. Once the communities realize that they've been duped and have only shat their own nest they'll turn on these motherfuckers.
I agree with you on that. I have always wondered why there are near constant truck burnings in Mooi River. It seems as though the Zulu ethnic mobilisation started with these truck drivers who believe their jobs have been stolen by foreigners. Zuma knows how to tap into this tension - this is precisely what he wanted

The KZN midlands has a long history of hardcore warlords. Zuma's rise to power stemmed from his influence over them. This is Zululand and its always been the most violent part of the country.

Not sure I would classify the Midlands as being the most violent.

I'd say that Richmond (where my cousin farms) beats it hands down.

And then there's Harding and Highflats.

My Dad farmed in Umzumbe and he had a little breeze block operation during the wars in the eighties and we were delivering a lorry load to the one guy whose house had been burned down in a raid. The burned out buildings seemed ok, so I asked the guy why he didn't simply replace the roof and he explained that he had to build a new structure because, if he simply repaired the house, they would take it as an insult and come back to fimish the job.

I don't think a lot of whites realised what was going on during those wars.
