Sabotage. Didn't expect it from Munster.

What's next? Faf forced to shave his hair after a training ground 'mishap'?

It actually sounds quite serious. De Allende has said they should be fine "in a few weeks"

Specially this.
While there have been rumours that Vermeulen underwent surgery on the ankle on Tuesday, no injury update has been issued by the Springboks or his franchise, the Bulls.

Imagine losing 3 starting players in the space of a day. At least we have depth at lock, but the other two were nailed-on starters.

Gelant touch and go to play against the BIL for the Stormers
Meanwhile, Dobson confirmed that fullback Warrick Gelant may not be fit in time for their match against the British & Irish Lions on 17 July. Gelant tore his anterior cruciate ligament last December and had to undergo surgery, which has since kept him off the field.

‘He is touch and go for the British & Irish Lions, which is on 17 July. That is four Currie Cup games in. So, he won’t play those games,’ Dobson said.

‘A provincial treasure like Warrick, the Lions game will be up to him. If he wants to be a part of that, or be more conservative, given how traumatic an injury it has been. But he will miss at least the first four Currie Cup games.’

Gelant should not be in the picture.

So without Duane, let's look at our options at 8

Marcel Coetzee - not currently in squad but also recovering from injury so fitness some way off 80 minutes in a test match.
Jasper Wiese - in good form but do we hand him a test debut against the Lions?
Dan du Preez - also in good form, but not sure if in good enough form to start.

Or do we put someone like Kolisi or van Staden at the back of the scrum instead of the side?

Vermeulen leaves a massive gap, that's for sure.

My biggest concern is not the loss of Vermeulen as a player (which is a massive loss) but as a senior leader in the team.
We have the cattle with Coetzee or Wiese to replicate his hard running playing style and floor game, but Kolisi leans heavily on Duane to motivate the pack when the chips are down.

His absence is going to be felt if/when the Lions pack gains the upper hand for periods in the match. Fuck.

Yes, good point. Duane almost appeared to be the on-field captain for large parts of 2019. Kolisi (and other senior players like PSdT and Eben) will have to step it up.

I'm as excited as anyone by the form of Wiese, but if you think he's going to have even close to the impact of Vermeulen, then you're having a laugh.

Looks like Rassie is backing Jasper already:
"Lucky for us Jasper can play No.8, with Duane’s injury now,” said Erasmus at the weekend

As said before, we have good alternatives at 8, but what will most be missed is duanes leadership. We dont have to kid ourselves, he was the on field captain of the boks the last years. His leadership would be sorely missed. Playing wise marcell would be the most likely replacement.

Not officially, but he's had surgery on his ankle. Can't see him being ready for test rugby in 7 weeks.

I'd be inclined to go with Jasper ahead of the du Preez bros at 8. From what I've seen of him he has a slightly higher work rate. How about starting Marx,at hooker of, course to make up for Duane's jackalling. Then bring Van Staden and Bongi on later.

Gone in for ankle surgery with an optimistic 6 week rehab period needed.
If he makes it in time, his fitness will be a concern.

Massive loss. With the 6-2 split (which I don't think will be used in the Lions series) he and PSdT were the 2 forwards that went the distance each time.
If he drops out, odds are that PSdT, Kolisi and Etzebeth will likely be required to last the 80 with a more traditional 5-3 split and lead the pack.

Jasper has been giving away many penalties. Got himself a couple of yellows and a red as well iirc. Played great rugby otherwise, but maybe still a bit of a liability, especially in a test series.

Our trio need a proper 6 to get the right combo, move Kolisi to 8, Marco in 6.

Impressive shift by Phepsi Buthelezi in a struggling Sharks side tonight. Another great contender for the Bok no8 jersey In 2-3 seasons.

assfly wrote: Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:14 am Weird game. Just read about the pre-match drama, no wonder we got pumped in the scrums (although a couple of the calls were harsh). Pretty shitty of Jake to object at the last minute, but I would probably want my coach to do the same thing if it was the other way around.

The only word I can use to describe that Sharks performance was disinterested. There didn't seem to be any real purpose to anything we did, felt like another warm up match with nothing at stake.

Our best players were Fassi, Am and Buthelezi. The latter had the best game I've seen him play, if he can keep those performances up then his future is very bright. Incredible turn of pace.

JJ vd Mescht. That kid needs to be put on a conditioning program, he is not fit to play professional rugby and he was walking about the place in the second half. I like having a big 4 lock, but if he could lose some timber then he'd be a much better player. Those poor props lifting him at 2 in the lineout

Kolisi was poor too, really shown up by Marco van Staden. Was probably the worst loose forward on the field if we're being honest.

Bosch. Eish. I didn't mind it when his kicking and running game covered for his defensive liabilities, but I don't see anything from him. I was hoping not being selected by the Boks would push him to a better performance, but he looked like a didn't give a vok all game. He is obviously under orders to kick it a lot more than we used to, so our coaches also have a lot to answer for. You know it's bad when we looked much better with Libbok on.

Anyway, good luck Bulls playing against the Benetton. Pity it isn't against one of the bigger teams, but it doesn't look like anyone in the NH took this tournament any more serious than we did.
Kolisi came on as a sub, scored a decent supporting try and then was taken off again.
