Always interesting to see.

Thing that leapt out to me is the difference in position between fullbacks in the Prem and the other two leagues. Pro14 seems to place a lot of value in wingers for some reason.

The thing that stands out for me is how lowly the Backrow are paid. They win games!!

Also Hookers ? if they can't throw in that are a disaster and are essentially another back row.

From a Prem perspective I think it's partly a supply and demand thing, but also age profile. It feels like there's always a decent supply of quality young back rowers around and at the moment there's a particularly strong crop of very young men in those positions.

Fair point.

I wouldn’t have thought 4&5 at the top they are wit a few exceptions just overgrown lummoxes 😁

If your kid says they want to play prop then best advise them to play TH

Hardest position on the park. Deserve to be rewarded.

Flyhalf, Locks and Tighthead the top earners. Skill and physical attributes, respectively. While backrow are arguably the most important positions, the physical prerequisites are not that special, size between Büssow and Pieter Steph du Toit, almost everybody can play there. Jonny May for example.

When AWJ finally retires in 2047, I expect the average salary for locks in the Pro14 may reduce a bit.

I wouldn't have guessed locks, either, but makes sense given how many tries come from kick to the corner / catch and drives these days...

Kind of shows how far apart the pro and amateur games are now.

No one wants to admit being a lock, backrows helping out is the nearest on dogshit park

Think it also reflects the relative rarity of body type compared to others and relative proportion internationals plus captains and seniority in those positions. Sometimes all 3 in one player.

Itoje, Lawes, Launchbury (c), Ewels (c), Hill, Gray, de Jager, etc.

Yep. Comes down to the cattle you can get in. There are just fewer massive 6 ft 6 + guys that are any good at the game. Back row produces a lot of superstars, but it must be far easier to fill your squad slots there.

Hookers being near the bottom of the list is more surprising to me as mentioned earlier.

I'm rather surprised that SH's in the Top14 are so badly paid compared to OH's ?

Considering how the key position in the French game is the SH, I'd expect their positions to be reversed in the pay scales compared with the other leagues

Supply and demand. Plenty of good SH's means lower wages across the board. Fuck all decent 10s means the price is jacked up.

But French teams don't give a shite about how decent their OHs are !

They're like kickers in the NFL; they have one job, & if they don't do it, there's a dozen more waiting in the wings to do it.

In the Top14 the OHs aren't the play makers, the SH are, that's the bottom line.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's true considering the stupid money they are willing to throw at the likes of Carter, Cruden and Sexton.

and all of those acquisitions were sooooo successful

it's beyond stupid to expect a bunch of players who's entire playing time has been with a 9 as the play maker, to suddenly pivot to having their OH be in that role.

It might work in teams like Toulon; when they were entirely mercs; see Jonny; but for most teams it was stupid.

A couple of years ago it would have been interesting to see Murray in France; as he has the skills it would take to be in that role.
