ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ve thought about this on so many occasions but today is the day and I am very grateful that I can do it on my terms. I’m officially retiring from professional rugby. A sport I’ve played for 32 years which has helped shape me into the person I am today. I can’t thank everyone who has played a part in my journey enough - from my teammates, opponents, coaching and management teams, sponsors and in particular you, the fans. A special mention to my friends and family who have supported and guided me through my career. Mum and Dad, thank you for everything you have sacrificed for me. My wife Honor for being my rock and allowing me to fulfill my dreams while raising our beautiful family - I can’t thank you enough. I’m excited about my next chapter in life and what that will look like. For now, I’m sad to walk away from playing but the timing is right. Rugby will always be a part of my life. Thank you.

Really lucky to have seen his whole career play out, he’s the benchmark for all other NZ 10s to aspire to in my book. Apart from the fact he could do it all he was so very reliable. When you watch him play in games like the WC Final in 2015 you just knew he was going to make those shots at goal, even from far out. Personally, I have a tough time on who was the better player between Carter and McCaw, for me it was Carter because being a back, that’s the type of player I wanted to be. It’s been a pleasure.
I still think Merhts was the better 10 for the Saders though...

For me it's McCaw, the 6,7,8 jersey for New Zealand has been the toughest ticket in the game, and McCaw is the best of the best.
Having said that, Carter was the perfect player for the time, the position and the game.

Quite like how Kiwias has put it on a timestamp that shows Lewis Moody getting deliberately blocked when chasing the kick - I think we can all agree that while Carter was quite good, and BOD's hurty was quite notable, the flagrant blocking of the Lions' star openside was THE most memorable part of this series. Kiwias clearly agrees.

I was in NZ for that Lions tour. Carter was superb. I'd seen him play three years earlier when I was in NZ and he was playing for HSOB v Christchurch on the park pitches in Christchurch. Bog of a pitch with a slope and just me and about 30 others watching on the touchline. I'd only gone to the park to walk off a hangover! He'd just returned to NZ after touring with NZ U19s in Europe. It was a hell of a game in terrible conditions but Carter stood out a mile as the class act and both teams had top top players.

A wonderfully delightfully player. Never got into any real trouble and was always a class gent. Hope he enjoys whatever he does next
