That, and I wondered how common these violent home invasions are? We, in the rugby world, are hearing this because he's relatively famous.

Doesn’t have to be very ‘pre’. If in the heat of a fight an offender attempts to kill because he’s coming off worse, that’ll do. In English law anyway. In those sorts of cases the nature and number of injuries inflicted is usually the evidential basis for an argument of intent to kill.

Suppose going into somebody's home with a machete is a strong inference that it's not a friendly chat you're going in for.
