The opening game of the new Super Rugby Pacific season has been postponed after several players tested positive for COVID-19.
Key points:
The opening game of Super Rugby Pacific was supposed to be played next Friday between Moana Pasifika and the Blues
The Moana Pasifika team are isolating in Queenstown, while no members of any New Zealand-based side have tested positive
This year is the inaugural season for Moana Pasifika and the Fijian Drua
The game was supposed to be the debut of the new Moana Pasifika side, who are entering the competition this year with the Fijian Drua.
Moana Pasifika was set to open their inaugural season against the Auckland-based Blues in Dunedin next Friday.
However, several players tested positive to COVID-19, with the team now isolating in Queenstown.
The outbreak has forced changes to the final preseason trial matches scheduled for the New Zealand-based teams this weekend.
In a statement released by the competition, Super Rugby said it would try and find options to reschedule the fixture.
No other matches from next week's opening round have been affected.
"All members of the other five New Zealand-based Super Rugby Pacific squads have tested negative for COVID-19 and will continue preparations for the start of the season, including preseason fixtures in Queenstown this weekend," the statement read.
After Super Rugby splintered following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia and New Zealand held their own competitions over the past two seasons.
In 2021 following each countries competition, a secondary Super Rugby season was held with each team getting to play all the other teams from their neighbouring country.
The Blues won the six-week trans-Tasman competition after the Queensland Reds and the Crusaders won the Australian and New Zealand competitions respectively.
In 2022, Super Rugby Pacific will be a 12-team competition with five teams from Australia and New Zealand, along with Moana Pasifika and Fijian Drua.

The sign up screen is a pop up window. It's too large for the page but you cannot scroll using mouse, slider, down key or touch screen. The only way to get to the next field is tab but if you get it wrong, the pop up screen disappears and you have to start again. Just for sanity, I tried it in Edge and Opera too. And it's just as sh*t in those. Another example of spotty kid web "designers" trying to show their skillz instead of keeping the f**king thing simple/functional.

Fijians' handling has been surprisingly uncertain and poor in perfect conditions.

Well they not doing much passing to practice their catching etc. They look like a team playing up a grade (NRC) and got a bit to learn. And one of them is how to scrum!

Fiji really not good. Thought they'd be more up for it. Making the Tahds look decent.

Having said that, the Tahds reserve front row is an embarresment.

FM, Berry is a sh*t ref. At the end there
- how is no Tah carded?
- from the quick tap, the Tahs are all of 1m back before tackling the ball carrier which is yet another pen
- instead, Berry blows up for time with ball held up over the line. Errrr..... that's really not an advantage and, anyway, he did not call advantage over

Usual Fiji stuff. Lack of precision. Poor decision making. Too many dumb pens. That said, their fitness looked better than the Tahs so hope for improvement. 1st win for Tahs in Soup in 400 days and after that it could be another 400 before their next one.

Happy with that start - another try would have made me happier with the Chiefs but we seemed to lose the hunger when we got to 23

Brilliant try by Crusaders from a scrum, Hall switching play with a superb pass. Not entirely sure about Ennor’s inside pass to Jordan

When do you think you'll be able to attend games again? I'm pleased they are not piping crowd noises in which is horrible IMO, but it's deathly quiet even from the players.

Just back on the clean tackle area. I think there in lies the ABs biggest issue up North, they are not used to heavily challenged tackles. Where the opposition grind and niggle and slow the ball, etc.
Ironically McCaw was one of the best at it.

Good guys stretching their lead to 28 - 13 and I must admit I am quite pleased with the way Burke is managing the game.

It's a bit of both. Here sides are not committing as much to the breakdown to contest. Happier to tackle and fan.

He was reaching for the ball and the tackler had to assume he would catch it. Tackles like that get let go frequently

That's this one done. As ever it seems, Canes look flash at times but undone in the basic, grunt work.
