The US is a strange country. All societies have some form of bell curve with the bulk of society sharing values in the middle. The US bell curve is inverted. It has millions of people who would fit in any civilised modern society at one end of the curve. It also has millions of stone age knuckle draggers at the other end. The middle is a desert.

I'm not sure that's true. Part of the travesty of modern day USA is that it's essentially minority rule in a lot of places. The vast majority of Americans are pro abortion, but through gerrymandering and other bullshit, the Republicans have this level of control. Democracy is dead in the USA.

I'm not sure it is true either, but it was a good picture in my head.

I do think they have a higher proportion of outright loons than elsewhere. I worked for a US firm for many years and was dumbstruck at how often highly educated, apparently urbane Americans came out with statements that have no place in polite society.

Gerrymandering is a good point. The way parties can mould electoral districts to suit them is astonishing.

That's true, the baseline level of nutbar is pretty high across the board.

Higher levels of religious zealots than most other Western nations as well? ... or, at least, politicians afraid of their voting power?

While it wasn't everyone, a significant number of the early settlers in the 1600s were zealots too extreme for European zealotry. It's baked into the fabric of the population and receiving a shot in the arm from Hispanic migration. Notorious single issue voters who can be mobilised by the abortion issue even if the Republicans are bad for them in more or less every other way.

The ultimate aim is to get a case to the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade. And some of the cunts that want thus will then go after the case that did away with the laws preventing interracial marriage (I forget the name).
