Secret Santa

At the Benetton Xmas dinner, secret Santa gifts were exchanged. Cheriff Traore's gift? A rotten banana in a bin bag...

I'm without words to be honest. Who the fuck finds such a thing funny? I'm not sure what I find worse. The act itself, that fact that his teammates laughed about it. Or Benetton's piss poor response.

Some people love 'edgy' humour. They know all the connotations and why this is a taboo, but they find the act of breaching the taboo funny in and of itself. That is, of course, a very generous reading of such behaviour.

I did see a google translate from an Italian paper where Traore mentioned that some team mates did support him in the moment, particularly the foreign players, so at least he's not totally alone in that environment, but it perhaps speaks to a troubling cultural issue if most of the rest felt it was fine to openly laugh at this. So too his mention of usually ignoring racist jokes.

Was genuinely upset when I saw this. Who on Earth thinks this is funny these days, just so fucking stupid.

Thought his response was excellent, both the immediate one and the acceptance of the apology, but even so there needs to be some serious internal consequences

I like edgy humour, but the starting point has to be that it is funny, which this manifestly isn't.

Edgy humour works in a team setting when everyone knows that it is being said in good humour between friends, cannot possibly see how this was intended in that way.

Can't really expect a bunch of young pro athletes in a sport that causes brain injury to think through a Secret Santa gift properly.

Finally some action and not just words. FIR is investigating, a Benetton player has been suspended pending the outcome

Also some vague and non-committal stuff about diversity training

URC have also demanded the Benetton make a full investigation and report on what action they will take
“The URC has been in communication with Benetton regarding the incident first identified in a social media post of Cherif Traorè the Italian international prop forward,” a statement read. “Benetton have been asked to provide a full report on what has occurred and what meaningful action will be taken as a result.
“Racism and discrimination of any kind are abhorrent, completely unacceptable in society and are utterly counter to the values of the sport of rugby and the URC.”

The fact that international news outlets have picked up on it, is probably what has prompted Benetton to suspend the player, otherwise I'm sure they thought their initial statement was probably sufficient

Possibly having second thoughts about heading to Italy after this incident? He was strongly rumoured to be going there for next season.

Also, looks like our very own Raggs in the replies.

Yes it was rumoured that he might follow minozzi to Treviso, and KC says that he has kept in touch with him with regard to him switching allegiance to Italy. But I very much doubt that that's on the cards anymore now he knows what kind of teammates he would have
