It has certainly improved the pace and maybe even the skill of the game in some ways but the lack of give and the friction remain serious problems. Nature still best.laurent wrote: Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:04 pm Rough.
4G made me stop because the bounce was destroying my already damaged knees
Jesus Christ that’s nasty. He lost a whole leg !!sockwithaticket wrote: Sun Mar 26, 2023 10:20 pm Dan Robson shared this last season
Those pitches should be banned as a club's matchday surface, they just aren't suitable for a sport like rugby.

I'll be able to stand next to a mast and transport myself into Katherine Jenkins knickers...
I suppose it's down to trying to monetarise the facilities. Just another impact of rugby's unsustainable spending.EnergiseR2 wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:55 am I think the maddest thing is the clubs still investing in them. It's one thing to buy the monorail but it's another to visit a city with one as the train topples off its track and say 'that's just what we need'. They are dangerous, sore and were not built for rugby. Its one of the mysteries of life that they exist bar for some easy drills in the pissing rain.
How very dare you.EnergiseR2 wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 9:40 amI am going to say with a lot of confidence you are rarely running at speed. You can slowly make your way across a floor of thumbtacks but it's still dangerous for those people with drive and panache like myselfJim Lahey wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 8:43 am I've played rugby matches on them probably 4 or 5 times, never had a problem tbf. Quite enjoyed them actually, compared to the normal bogs that teams play on in Ulster.
High school rugby players use the expression "beef steak" or "hamburger" to describe the grazing injuries to knees, calves, and thighs from going to ground on the gravel-like, hard-packed dirt most schools still play on.inactionman wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:48 am On a separate but tangentially related note, I heard that some Japanese schools play rugby on gravel.
I'd say it puts hairs on your chest, but it's more likely just to scour your chest off.
Almost entirely a mud based game when I was at school, apart from the 1st XV, who had grass.Kiwias wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:08 amHigh school rugby players use the expression "beef steak" or "hamburger" to describe the grazing injuries to knees, calves, and thighs from going to ground on the gravel-like, hard-packed dirt most schools still play on.inactionman wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:48 am On a separate but tangentially related note, I heard that some Japanese schools play rugby on gravel.

My Prep school rugby pitch, we did stone picking days both pre and during the season.inactionman wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:48 am On a separate but tangentially related note, I heard that some Japanese schools play rugby on gravel.

I always seemed to end up playing frozen pitches, where you either twisted ankles or picked up the equivalent of papercuts from frozen divots - freezing cold skin cuts pretty easily.Dinsdale Piranha wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 1:31 pmAlmost entirely a mud based game when I was at school, apart from the 1st XV, who had grass.Kiwias wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:08 amHigh school rugby players use the expression "beef steak" or "hamburger" to describe the grazing injuries to knees, calves, and thighs from going to ground on the gravel-like, hard-packed dirt most schools still play on.inactionman wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:48 am On a separate but tangentially related note, I heard that some Japanese schools play rugby on gravel.

Private primary school, but has the option for pupils to stay on for years 7 and 8 before finally moving onto secondary.C69 wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 6:11 pmOn a separate note, what actually is a prep school?Glaston wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 3:38 pmMy Prep school rugby pitch, we did stone picking days both pre and during the season.inactionman wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:48 am On a separate but tangentially related note, I heard that some Japanese schools play rugby on gravel.

Yeah I thought so, just never met anyone who went to one, that I know of, and wanted a personal explanation.Dinsdale Piranha wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 6:16 pmThe one you go to before a public school. i.e. up to age 13.
