My first reaction was good bloody riddance.

Arch Thatcherite chancellor and climate change denier. A man who has had over his career a hugely negative impact.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?

Also a full on Brexiteer despite living in France.

But obviously also a much loved family man so I won’t be joining in a cheering of his death

One of Thatchers henchmen who, like the rest of them, fell out with her and her bampot politics. Campaigned for Brexit from France FFS! He had a good innings, time to go, cheerio!

Cheering would be weird but he was another gobshite. His line that he loved Europe and loves living in France but the EU has no purpose is exceptionally fucking thick. Its the sort of line that reminds me that the anointed ones are often immensely narrow
Bit like Stanley Johnson tbh.

As it happens I voted Remain but I don’t that’s an illogical or thick point of view. And I’m not even anointed.

“You could say that once upon a time it served a useful purpose, in confining Germany. You could make that case – and I really bought into this in the 50s. But it’s passed its sell-by date: it’s served its purpose. I see no purpose in the EU now at all
You agree with that? I don't believe anyone who is not living in a world of Biggles and tally ho actually believes that shit. In the same interview he said, I quote, it doesn't really matter if the negotiations are protracted. He's an ideologue and clearly a bit of a fucking idiot. He believed that if you just pressed stop you could become Swirzerland only problem being he doesn't really know what Switzerland is
I’m not defending everything Lawson said, I assume you read the bit where I said I voted Remain. I just think the argument “You like Europe so you must like the EU” is a very weak one.

I didn’t think what I posted above would be so difficult to comprehend or distort.

Not really. You wrote "His line that he loved Europe and loves living in France but the EU has no purpose is exceptionally fucking thick."

I completely understand Gog's point in this. There is no reason why the above should be "thick", let alone exceptionally so. Europe is a place. The EU is a political entity. They are very different.

I also think it's pretty arrogant of anyone to throw insults like that at someone who clearly thought for himself like Lawson, who (for instance) could see when so many others couldn't that lowering tax rates in the 80s might bring in more tax revenue.

Fucked us twice with fossil fuels. Once by pissing away the North Sea oil revenue and once by acting as a paid liar for them as the BBC's "and now for the other point of view from the Global Warming Policy Foundation".

That was not the main point or anywhere near the main point. Anyway arguing on the tittyweb is a mugs game
Hard to see how it's not the main point in:

It's also the point on which Gogs engaged with you.

I can see why you might not like "arguing: online.

Can't believe people are so ungrateful as to challenge ER rather than just accept his words of wisdom as the witty & insightful gifts he's choosing to bestow on us lesser intellects

We are Germanys most important market ergo they will.have to sign a trade deal quickly and on favourable terms. Now like many posters I have done a bit of economics in college but I didn't need this to see that was not what was going to happen. In fact I thought Europe would completely restructure its market rather than accede to the English. Covid of course assisted them in this
I think his stupidest line was that Northern Ireland wouldn't be a problem post Brexit because the natural thing would be for Ireland to come back under under home (British) rule.

But I will allow he created strong competition for the stupidest thing he said, and on balance I'm glad he's dead
