I think if you compared Rugby, to Racing in terms of the number of races, number of participants, & the fatality rate, you'd ban Rugby first.

Doubt it. There were 189 horse deaths due to racing in 2019. Considering there are many more rugby players than racing horses, you would have to be talking about thousands of Rugby deaths each year.

And obviously it's a wrong headed comparison.

Putting aside the horse racing debate, the GN is in no way justifiable.

I keep hearing the mantra, if humans were dying doing a sport we would ban it. Dozens killed climbing in the highlands this year. Not a peep.

I'm no expert on horse racing but I presume these animals are useless for anything other than racing,so presumably if we ban the sport we would essentially lose all the horses, which I doubt anyone will maintain if they are of no use.

What's the main points?

Some people opposed to horse racing in principle due to the deaths. Some of whom misunderstand the way horses and ex racers are actually treated.

Others taking the view that sport has risk, some sports are riskier than others, this is a risky one for humans and riders.

General acceptance that the Grand National is too much about the spectacle and this should be changed for welfare reasons, e.g. fewer horses, so better quality, more space so fewer fallers etc, but risk can't be eliminated.
