Reported today that he has been in a coma since the 10th of June.

2018 claims of heavy alcohol and pain pills abuse resurfacing, friends requesting a toxicology report scared his alleged addiction might have caused the collapse.

Never knew he's been trying his luck in NFL, same as Naas Botha in the 80s.

Trying to make it as a kicker at 40 or as a kicking coach maybe?

He had a rough time with his ex inlaw mother and Mrs karlien van jaarsveld after Willie le Roux took her gap.

We start watching these kids play rugby at school, then Varsity Cup and onwards to provincial rugby and finally the Boks. But after they've peaked, their slide out of pro rugby can be really awful to watch.

I often wonder if SA Rugby does enough to help these players think about their career after rugby. They can't all be coaches and commentators.

I get what you're saying about SA Rugby helping the players and I agree, but only to a certain point. He is a grown man. He knew all along that his career will stop in his 30's.

Ja it's a tough one. He obviously went to a good school and had a support network around him. But the day players hang up their boots will always come.

His brain was mashed potatoes long before and not due to alcohol and drug abuse. I believe those were just his coping mechanisms.

Let's hope he makes a full recovery. Surely he can be utilised as a kicking coach somewhere.

His is a special case though. He's not just any player who retired and could go on to do something else.

I remember him taking that massive hit from Brian Lima in 03 and somehow getting back up afterwards. Tough little fecker.

Wasn’t that where Lima chiropracted himself?

Joost got caught trying to take a sneaky tap and off-loaded a high hospital pass. Derick had to jump and reach up for it and Lima had him lined up for the perfect rib shot.

100% legal tackle. Textbook.

If anybody deserved to be carded it would've been Joost for throwing such a hospital pass knowing you have Lima on the field.

I was never a fan of Leaflung, but kudos to him for getting up after that. I would've been taken away in a hearse.

Completely different.

Bismarck was high. Relative head and shoulder height.

And he took him up horiz and drove his shoulder in to the ground.

IRB, TMO (Ayoub, yup even him), Jonathan 'Jiffy' Davies, Sean Fitzaptrick, Justin Marshall and every saffa says you and the ref (Poite) are still wrong
The IRB have acknowledged that the decision by Poite to yellow card Du Plessis for the tackle on Carter was incorrect. Consequently, a SANZAR hearing has ruled that the red card be struck from the record as the decision was wrong and the tackle was within the laws of the game.
Justin Marshall, co-commentator on the day for Sky NZ, was outspoken in his view of it. “That’s rubbish. It’s just a big tackle,” he said when seeing the replays. “Get real. Come on… Absolutely okay and to say no arms is ridiculous”.
former All Black captain Sean Fitpatrick said “The worst performance of the day was from the referee. He got that one wrong”.

Liefling was a Boland Landbouer. They can take it. Agree that there was nothing wrong with the tackle. Nowadays the players need to go around the ankles, like in our days.

Simply put, you are wrong. But he did touch him, which I know was not allowed at the time.
