I know there are a lot of people (not necessarily on here) who advocate for exapanding the World Cup, but the minnow vs. tier 1 matches last weekend have only hardened my resolve that it's a dumb idea. I doubt this one, South Africa vs. Romania or New Zealand vs. Namibia are going to do much to change that opinion.

There should be a Tier 2 comp for sides (Plate, whatever) for the sides that fall at 1st round.

That would have put France out of the main competition at their last home RWC, South Africa would have been out at the first hurdle last time, when they won it, and the time before that

It may have been helpful if he'd written what he meant.

Probably less of a big deal now with domestic competitions insisting on fewer foreigners, but I suspect the clubs would have objected to that not so long ago. The Prem and Top14 sides getting a raft of Islanders and Georgians plus the odd Yank or Canuck back in the sides after the pool stages was relatively important for league performance while other international stars were away.

The bigger blocker would probably be union finances. It's not cheap for the likes of Samoa or Portugal to pony up for the travel, accommodation and facilities of a full rugby squad plus support personnel and equipment.

Enjoyed watching Uruguay..three (well two) great tries.

Wonder if the lack of BP will cost France

Congrats, Uruguay. Says a lot about how much trouble they were giving France that big guns like Aldritt were brought on before the 50 minute mark and it still didn't make a huge amount of difference.

A very spirited performance with much to be proud of. Shame they couldn't rely on their lineout when they kicked penalties to touch.

Someone else said that on the other thread.

If France beat Italy and Namibia with just straight four point wins they will be on 16. New Zealand can't catch them with three BP wins as that puts them on 15.

Italy are similar, if they lose to France but get a BP and get two more BP wins (including over NZ) they could top France, but it's unlikely

No change in height.. no mitigation.. even the French on the PR thread think it's a stone cold red... all of them... no dissenters...

His height does not change have a look...

I suspect they'll let it slide, but he was going in with a tucked arm which means it wasn't a legal hit and mitigations don't apply.

The arm wasn't tucked. Look at the upper arm, it's out wide, the forearm is still coming up, but that's never a tucked arm.

There was a drop in height, not major but it's there, the tackler is also bent kneed and well bent at the waist.

You can check my history on how I view high tackles and often call for reds, but in this case I can see how it stays a yellow.

Ok watched it again. The arm is out, but he's still nowhere close to making a legal tackle, so I stand by saying it should be a red because with it not being a legal tackle mitigations don't apply.

Nah, because it's the world cup. We saw at the last one that a bunch of hits that would have been cast iron reds in domestic competitions earlier in the year were coming up as yellows. The powers that be don't want to 'ruin' the tournament with what's perceived to be too many or unfair cards even if going easy goes against precedent.

And yet it's more red than Tom Curry's... at least there was a change in height with that tackle... as he was coming out the sky...

At some stage WR will have to respond to the accusations that it's screwing the tier 2/3 teams in decisions; & they'll probably do it when the consequences are minimal to the tier 1 side; like this !

I find Curry's completely inexcusable. If looking to tackle someone as soon as they come down from catching a ball, you have no reason to be standing straight and smashing their face with yours..

I agree, think it was the reddest so far. Tucked arm, straight to the head.

My biggest fear is that players on the end of it jumping up and not making a big deal of it are influencing the decision - see also the Kriel hit. We are already getting into the situation of players rolling about to get it looked at and things like this just make it worse. It’s shit.

On another note, well done Uruguay! Those backs looked dangerous and 9 & 12 looked like serious players. They did very well in the the last WC if I remember correctly so another country WR should be throwing cash at.

To be fair, I thought the ref on the pitch was very good and fair tonight.

I don’t like the TMO being able to start conversations with the ref telling him her wrong like happened a few times tonight. It’s very quickly getting to the stage where the TMO is making all the big calls

One of the best ever performances by a minnow in a world cup and most of the thread is filled with red card debate. Who actually gives a fuck!
