Dupont gone

And with it, there goes Fra's chance of a RWC. Confirmed as a orbital fracture.
I'm pretty angry about this on 2 grounds:
1)
Torquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 2:27 pm
This is clearly a 1st team selection run out along with getting Danty and Baille some game time.
I suspect that whatever the score is at 1/2 time, as long as the game is dusted, France will ease off.
Well, that should have been the plan.
Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Sep 21, 2023 7:51 pm
FM. This always had the potential to get ugly but it's worse than that. Fra playing to perfection and Nam doing the worst things you could possibly do against this Fre side i.e. kick badly into broken play and not properly police the breakdown.
Time to get everybody off now.
F**king obvious.
Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Sep 21, 2023 7:59 pm
Fingers crossed neither side ends up with injuries which is a risk when things get this mismatched.
Tired players make mistakes.
2)
Not that it might have changed, much but the fact that Dupont sat in the dressing room until the game's end before seeing anyone and going to the hospital. Apparently he had to wait for the game's medical officer.......... who had to remain until the final whistle to monitor the remaining players' safety.

Confirmed confirmed? Out for the whole tournament? Haven't read that yet, thought he might still feature, with a mask maybe.

If true, it is a bummer really. One can only admire the rugby abilities of that guy. That was supposed to be his tournament.

Ahh. My point was Fra's chances of beating either Ire or SA in the 1/4 are gone without Dupont and so that is the whole tournament for them.

Doubt France can find a bent ref to bend games enough to compensate for Dupont's loss.

Ok, get what you mean. But, it is still a 23 man game and your team is a settled squad with many strenghts, not just dupont. Still a force to be reckoned with, especially at home.

I am not convinced he wont be back for the QF. He has 3 weeks, i have no doubt they will be getting the best medical help in France on this.

With absolutely nothing to go on, I reckon he will be back for the QF's.
It does make me wonder what the actual rules are around it though. If he insists on playing can a doctor over rule and stop him?

All this clearly depends upon what type of # he has and the severity.
Having had a depressed # of the zygomatic arch with paraesthesia I can say that it's not nice. It basically stopped me playing ever again.
I opted not to have surgery and it took 2 years to fully recover.
If he is rushed back into a full contact sport he may regret it for the rest of his life

It's a reasonably common boxing injury and it's always treated as something that needs a lot of care, because you risk permanent damage.
When HairyDonkey wore his mask, was that the same or "just" a cheek/jaw fracture?

No. That was his nose. Accidental collision with Chabal in a T14 game.
{EDIT} Sorry. Just realised this would have been back when it was still 2 pools of 8 and so 16 teams i.e. Elite 1 and not T14.

Looks like it's officially over.
According to Bernol, Dupont is to be operated on by a specialist (
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2893-5954) which would necessitate him being out "for several weeks".

Waiting until the end of the game would have made no difference at all. Also, they probably won’t operate for a week or so, because there will be a load of swelling and they need that to settle to avoid wound breakdown. Zero chance of him taking any further part in the tournament, I’d say. Unfortunately.

Does this mean Le Garrec will get a call up? Fuck knows what they were thinking leaving him on when the game was so obviously won, I appreciate it could happen in any game, but why take the risk in a gimme in the first place?

I doubt it. Galthie clearly doesn't rate Le Garrec at the moment and if a replacement SH is called (Lucu and Couilloud already in the group), my bet is it will be Serin the Snail.
As for the bit in bold:
- I get why they wanted him to start. With there having been so many disruptions plus the poor performance against Uruguay, it made some sense to get the 1st choice out for the 1st time in an age (Aldritt was rested as a precaution) and make sure
the thing ran smoothly.
- But once the BP was secured, risking any of your key players was retarded (hence my "Get everybody off"). Should have pulled Baille (which they did), Dupont, Jalibert and Danty immediately.
The epitome of a Pyrrhic victory. For the sake of running up a near century rather than a half century against Namibia, you pretty much throw away your whole comp game plan.

I've just had a look at the tackle again, it wasn't remotely legal, leading with the head, slightly bent at the hips, far too high at all times. It's exactly the sort of collision the game is trying to get rid of.

It was a horrible collision. You could even see Du Pont grimace as he knew it was about to happen in slow-mo.
Such a shame to ruin a player in his peaks’ RWC. Chance in lifetime gone !

We'll get to see if a long term injury to the World Cup poster boy prompts use of aggravating factors. All too little for Dupont, and in this the IRB may care to reflect on the laxity they've shown around high tackles for the past few weeks, they've set the cultural standards, just very bad ones

Err, bit harsh, it was the 45th minute, he wouldn't have been on for much longer and he paid the price for a fucking horrible "tackle"/headbutt.

Torq had called this before it happened and they were already 50 points up. Had it happened at the same point in the Uruguay game I’d agree with you. The only thing he was doing on the pitch, bar entertaining the crowd. Was offering himself up to be injured. Not sure I’d have played him at all in their position but he’d have certainly been hooked at half time once it became clear Namibia weren’t causing problems.

Marx shows it's hardly just about playing. And the thing about being a rugby player anyway is it involves playing.
It just horrible bad luck for the pairing of Ntamack and now Dupont, both massive losses to France and the WC
