European tribes

Was watching the football down the pub yesterday and was taking to a very interesting Belarusian who was there with a Ukrainian pal.

Just triggered a thought in me, exactly how many "tribes" are there in Europe? Not necessarily nations or ethnicities but people of some sizeable number who have their own identity and culture. It will take some time but I wouldn't mind having a stab at listing them.

I think research a while back showed that there are like 150 or 160 distinct cultural groups in Europe.

Too loose a definition, you could argue for 10's of 1000's of tribes using that. Common ancestry maybe,
common beliefs, single figurehead or "chief"...its a tough one really

Fair shout. Maybe a common, distinct language or a viable claim to nationhood?

I'm going to have to start with nation states and then go from there.

Though that means leaving out people like the Sami who have a distinct language and culture but no nation state...
