So Glasgow are stepping up to take over from (skint) Brisbane for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

HOWEVER in order to curb costs in the future and help the Games survive, a lot of sports have been dropped permanently.

THE 10 AXED SPORTS
Rugby sevens
Cricket
Hockey
Table tennis
Squash
Badminton
Beach volleyball
Diving
Non-track cycling
Rhythmic gymnastics

...AND THOSE THAT MADE THE CUT
Athletics
Boxing
Bowls
Cycling
Gymnastics
Judo
Netball
Swimming
Weightlifting
3x3 basketball

I understand that they want to curb costs in the future and allow poorer nations (e.g Caribbean) to have a chance to host in the future....so dropping hockey and squash which need dedicated facilities makes sense.

BUT they keep cycling, so every time they need a world-class velodrome?? And cycling on the road (which costs peanuts) has been dropped instead?

Cycling on the road costs a fair amount in terms of closing roads, barriers all over city centre and the number of people that are stewards on the course. Plus all the vehicles, police costs etc. But I would have loved to see it, particularly given how successful the World Championships in Glasgow were.

Also disappointed about the rugby sevens, that sold really well last time so there would have been a fair amount of income to offset the costs.

Should have dropped boxing imo, corrupt S fuck and on the way out of the Olympics.

I don't know why they don't just do a 7s series event in Glasgow at the same time, and it can double-up as a Commonwealth event.

But for the rest, ja most of them make sense.

Doesn't the UK get loads of medals in cycling?

3v3 basketball... that noted sport among Commonwealth nations. Aus v Can for gold? At the Olympics, they were the only ones in the women's table and there were no Commonwealth countries on the men's side.

Not sure I agree. Sports like squash and hockey (see also table tennis and badminton) in the Commonwealth games are, Olympics aside, pinnacles of the sport. Seems silly to exclude sports that actually really want to be there

Probably a coincidence.

I don't think they've been dropped permanently. The Commonwealth Games have always been quite flexible and this is kind of an emergency situation - what can we do in the time within the budget. The future of the games is in doubt though, and more than anything it's been demonstrated tgst cities and countries can't use thus as an excuse to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Any future host needs to have nearly all venues in place prior to bidding.

Nope, the announcement yesterday was that the only way to keep it going is to have a smaller, core number of events without extending in the future. Sad really.

Point I'm making is that there aren't many sports that have been in every games - the ones being dropped that have featured every time for a long time are road cycling, badminton and diving.

Are you sure about that? Lots of international orgs representing excluded sports have put out statements that they’ve been assured the decision for them to be excluded this time round doesn’t preclude their involvement in future games.

I assumed they meant that each games would have a smaller number of sports, but they would change each time, on a kind of rota (except athletics & swimming, which are guaranteed a spot).

That's my understanding, athletics and swimming are the only ones guaranteed to be in, and then in the past you make it up to 17 other sports from the list. But it's more likely to be 10-12 sports in the future, from what's being reported.
