Usually depend if it fall within the IRB test window.

I have full confidense in what Nienaber/Rassie are doing and their selections. They have a much wider vision to what we supporters think/see. It will be the first time that we get a proper hand over between two WC cycles. This will only make us stronger.

I also think many of the older Bokke will retire after the Lions tour. This will give the newbies at least months to work with the more experience players and the coaches. Its a long season and to try and argue why Nohamba or Hershell Jantjies is worth in the squad is such a waiste.

Bring on the Lions!!

Dan du Preez/Jasper are there to back up Duane imo. I believe Rassie would use them before Marcel. The squad contains all the tools necessary to beat the Lions. Hendricks, Serfontein, Akker, Marcel would be the only additions Rassie would need. I think Tyrone Green should be there for the A-team game, he's really coming along for Quins.

Joseph Dweba (Bordeaux-Bègles, uncapped)

Scarra Ntubeni (DHL Stormers, 1 cap, 0 pt

Dan du Preez (Sale Sharks, 4 caps, 0 pts)

Rynhardt Elstadt (Toulouse, 2 caps, 0 pts)

Kwagga Smith (Yamaha Júbilo, 6 caps, 0 pts)

Sanele Nohamba (Cell C Sharks, uncapped)

Wandisile Simelane (Emirates Lions, uncapped)

Yaw Penxe (Cell C Sharks, uncapped)

Rosko Specman (Toyota Cheetahs, uncapped)
Rassie has already said Marcell is backup for Duane but being watched through the next 3 weeks.

Jeez there's a few real old timers in both squads. This series is shaping as a battle of the dinosaurs.

All of the probable starting line up for the Boks barring Duane Vermeulen and Willie let Roux could make the '23 RWC. The old heads are great to have in a do or die series like this. Martin Johnson, Beast types.

Yeah, but all it takes is a few untimely injuries and you're suddenly back in the Steyn Age.

Correct, but the rules changed in about 2010 when both of their nationalities became an issue.

Brian Mujati was told he had to apply for citizenship when Meyer selected him in 2012 and despite playing 12 tests already, which effectively ended his Bok career.

Beast was granted citizenship after Archbishop Desmond Tutu stepped in.

I suspect Madosh Tambwe may have the same issue. But I beleive he moved to SA at quite a young age so may already have citizenship or permanent residence

Great squad, barring injuries to Pollard or some more locks I think we have enough to take the Lions 2-1.

Now......let’s talk about how much we’re going to box-kick. *sigh*

Tshituka is Congolese. Not sure if has plans for SA citizenship but he's only 22 and will definitely be in the mix if he sorts out an SA passport.

Overall I think it's a good squad. There are a lot of players who aren't going to get near the starting team for the Lions tests, but I'd like to see someone like Nohamba be given a run in the SA A team and see if he ups his game.

The biggest problem I have is Scarra ahead of Akker.

But overall there is some serious quality and depth in that team, especially when you thin of the quality that we've left out.
Beast is / was a Zimbo. Who played for the Boks while traveling on a Zim passport. Same with the Lions & Stormers Zimbo tighthead.

Sadly I think that Nohamba is a one season wonder

If he chews bubblegum while playing for the Boks.........
Indeed, but they changed that rule. It was a big thing at the time and Beast had to scramble for a SA Passport.
It's not a World Rugby or SARU rule, it's a rule instituted by the Department of Sport and Recreation.

The amount of box kicking will completely depend on the amount of time we spend between our own 22m and the halfway line. That's the box kick zone.
The is the best probability play in that section of the pitch.

Jake White plays a different strategy. Still lots of kicking, but at different times for different reasons.

Jake is a set piece zealot...particularly lineouts. His style revolves around traditional territory and trying to force turnovers with competitive lineouts in the opposition half.
Or squeezing the opposition in their red-zone and milking penalties. Morne Steyn is the perfect 10 for that gameplan. All you need is a monster pack and a solid 10 and you are 60% of the way there.
Once you are in the opposition half, anything your backs can achieve is just gravy; but you don't need them to do much.

Rassie and Nienaber are all about momentum and disrupting the opposition's structure.
Attacking structure is disrupted by tackle dominance making rucks 1-2 seconds slower and always ensuring opposition support players are moving backwards to stay onside. And defensive structure is disrupted by short-range box kicks that are competitive either in the air or as high probability turnovers, where the Bok players moving forward catch a forming defensive line on the back foot before they can set. Once you have forwards covering backs in open space, anything can happen.

If the Boks dominate up front, and they should, the Lions are going to have to play higher risk rugby. Easy to do if you're the All Blacks but these guys won't have anywhere near that level of cohesion. I'm not sure what cunning plan Gatland can come up with to outwit Rassie.

But if they win the first test then all bets are off. The prospect of winning a series against the Boks will motivate them and put some real jitters into the Boks. Imma start having nightmares about going into a third test decider with all scrumhalves injured and Nohamba coming on in the last 20 minutes and us defending a 2 point lead.

Gatland is one of the 4 or 5 smartest coaches out there. If somebody can outfox Rassie and Nienaber, it's going to be him.

But yes, I'm also very curious to see what he comes up with. The November 2018 test in Cardiff that the Boks lost showed how to really exploit the Boks' defensive structure out wide. Granted, the Boks were still pretty new to it and there were a couple of communication lapses between Kriel and Dyantyi, but it is an inherent weakness in the pattern. The All Blacks also exploited it with a crossfield kick that led to the Goodhue try in the 2019 Wellington draw.

If you can get outside of the wing that is biting into the attacking 13 you have a lot of space out wide to work with, with only the sweeping cover defenders and fullback to stop it. A skip pass or crossfield kick will unlock it and if you have a speedy loosie like Simmonds running a support line for the wing, things could get ugly for the Bok fullback. But, as you say, it's high risk as that skip is also a nice intercept target.

But ja, that's wat Gatland's Wales did successfully in 2018 and they got around the Boks a number of times. Lucky for us they didn't have support runners for their wings on the day, otherwise we would've lost by alot more than the 20-11 scoreline the match ended on.

The Lions can field a monster pack themselves. So we mustn't think that we can simply bully them.
That have some outstanding backs who can play very fast paced rugby 🏉

I've had my whinge about the squad.

Now into full support mode.

Lions are sweating over Sam Simmonds and Dan Biggar who both picked up injuries yesterday. An injury to Biggar would most likely hand Farrell the 10 jersey, which I would love to see as I think the Boks could rattle him again.

https://www.sarugbymag.co.za/bok-duo ... cident-1/

Springboks Damian de Allende and RG Snyman sustained ‘substantial burns to their legs, hands and face’ after being involved in a ‘fire-pit accident’ along with other Munster teammates over this past weekend.

According to the latest Munster medical report, De Allende, along with fellow Springbok RG Snyman and club teammates CJ Stander and Mike Haley, required treatment for burns sustained in the accident.

De Allende and Snyman came off the worst of the four players, sustaining ‘more substantial burns to their legs, hands and face’. They are both still expected to link up with the Springbok squad upon the completion of their provincial season

The duo will not take part in their respective training and injury rehabilitation programmes and will instead consult a specialist later this week.

Snyman is already recovering from a long-term knee injury, while De Allende will not be available for Munster’s PRO14 Rainbow Cup clash with Zebre on Friday evening.
