The Boks look better then I thought they would. Pretty sure if it was a genuine test we would win it with ease.

Good:
Defense in the first half was close to brutal.

PSdT workrate was outstanding. When he came off we missed him.

Our backs except Moernaai & Faf play like a settle unit.


Bad
Scrumming was kak. Trevor still on the Miele pap.

Faf back to box kicking. Vok it's painful to watch.

Moernaai kick to much . We have such good backs now.

Second half was shocking.

Lineout drives struggle.


There is lots of work ahead.

The scrum worried me the most, Trever struggled again, as against Georgia. Malherbe needs to start, Koch to come on.

Driving maul didnt work at all in the second half, Lions defended that very well.

Lukhanyo Am was outstanding.

Am was fantastic. Very impressed that he performed so well whilst carrying the burden of captaincy. And no Duane to mentor him.

So Am is a fantastic Bok captain but kak $harks captain?

Lukhanyo Am really seems to bring his A game for the Boks. At 27 years old, he still has a good few years in front of him. I wouldn't mind him taking over the captaincy over the next World Cup cycle. On last night's performance I don't see a South African 13 at home or abroad who is better. He is a cracking defender and creates and scores tries with his running lines.

In my view both tighthead props were pretty damn average. This really never helped our scrum. Coenie also never dominated.
The 2 yellow cards really set us back and they reverted to kick and pray under the pressure of playing 13 against 15.
Had they not have had this extra pressure I think that we would have klapped them.

Weird, but also enjoyable game. I felt we completed smashed them in the first half, and then we came out in the second half with a much more experimental approach.

The good: defence was phenomenal. PSdT, Marco, Eben, Mosterdt all outstanding.
Backline looks dangerous when they've got the ball.
Nice effort from Dweba, I like him. Brings some attitude.
I thought Willemse made a good impact when he came on. Best player off the bench.
We looked vokken pissed off in the first half, love to see it.
I love watching Marco van Staden. That guy has 100 caps written all over him. I thought the yellow was quite harsh.

The bad: kicking. Not just too much of it, but poorly executed.
Pity we never saw the scrums fire, but probably a blessing as Trevor was very poor.
Morne just looked way off the pace and our backline never looked in control.
Not the usual impact off the bench.

The Lions' maul defence was interesting, Boks are going to have to do their homework on how to counter it. They were deliberately swimming around and then releasing one arm, so technically legal but making a real nuisance of themselves.

On the Lions; I know Biggar was injured but Farrell is a hopeless 10. Murray is also way off the pace and looks uncomfortable dealing with the ref.
Definitely looking for space out side on attack, but too predictable.
Itoje is just incredible. Him and Curry really stepped it up in the 2nd half.

Agree on Van Staden. Great to watch.

I actually think Willemse's best position could be 12 in the SA setup. Crash ball it up, so no need to pass. And he is solid on defence and an extra kicking option. Not first choice, but from the bench if Steyn is too old/fat.

I think the goal line defence was very good from SA, but to be fair it was easy stuff to defend, 1 up hits which is meat and drink for this Saffer team. As for defence in other areas, lets be fair, it was not like you had to try that hard, Murray, Farrell and Aki offered absolutely ZERO threat with the ball, fucked over any opportunities that the wide players could have had, and basically all they had to do was defend the really shitty kicks the Lions put through.

LOTS of... I think Willemse has played himself into the bomb squad. He has put in two really physical cameos now. Offers the same versatility as Frans, who was just bad against Georgia.

Haven’t read thread just finished watching it - some thoughts

1. Faf de Clerk was as clear a red as you will see, proper home town TMO

2. Not bad considering that was basically the boks

3. Delighted AWJ is back as Conor Murray shouldn’t be anywhere near the test team his box kicking was Taranaki girls U12 standard.

4. I think if they had showed an along the line angle LRZ would have been awarded a try.

5. Good to shut SA out for whole second half but they were tactically naive not taking scrums when SA down to 13

Fair enough - another nail on Conor Murray’s coffin he and Farrell were spectacularly bad…

Erasmus said the team was continuing their preparations without Duane Vermeulen and if he did recover by the second or third test it would be a bonus.
“Duane is currently rehabbing with the Bulls. He is touch and go for the second or last test match. The big question is always how match-fit he is. You saw today when guys haven’t played for a while and at this intensity.
“A guy like Alun-Wynn Jones, who has been out for a while, will struggle, so Duane will also struggle when he returns. But I think if you can have the right combinations next to him and substitutions and go for a six-two split then you can counter them.
“He is definitely in our plans but it is not a definite where I can tell you it is going so well that he is going to be there in the second test or third test. There is a good possibility but we’re not banking on that at this stage.”
While there was some concern when talisman Pieter-Steph du Toit left the field for an HIA test, Erasmus said he believed he was fine and that the decision was made not to return him to the field as it would be a risk.
“In all honesty, he passed it. It was a massive game and we really wanted to win the game. Both teams wanted to win the game. It was really a precaution, it sounded like he was cleared but we thought it would be stupid to get him back onto the park in a game where in 10 days time the test matches start. He will be fit when the test matches start.”
The Boks are likely to face the Bulls on Saturday while the Lions will face the DHL Stormers in their weekend match.

Don't know how it works if someone was vaccinated but here at work we've been told that if you test positive you need to quarantine for two weeks. 10 days isolation is only for when you were in contact with someone that tested positive.
