22 years old, first olympics, sets a personal best, and comes in 6th. Not a bad day at the office, I reckon.Gumboot wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 2:52 am Bronze this time for our Val.![]()

Lol. Unfortunately, that's the Olympics — not all medals are created equal.westport wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 6:09 am 4 BMXers, 4 medals (2 Gold, Silver, Bronze) all done on 2 bob and a pickled egg.
About 40 rowers, 2 bob and a pickled egg for £24m.
Not only that, some events you can medal with a few minutes of performing, others can take hours. I actually enjoy the type of events I normally have no interest in (not cycling, sailing or rugby, naturally) as I find the competition more complelling when it is ‘new’.Certain Navigator wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:44 amLol. I don't really enjoy the BMX competitions - but it's really good to see sports like that in the Olympics - they are very much working class sports - medals that every kid could aspire to - Much as I like the Rowing, it is very much a posh people sport - like sailing and equestrian.Certain Navigator wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:44 amLol. Sailing isn’t posh, well the dinghy sailing anyway.Ovals wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 7:51 pmI don't really enjoy the BMX competitions - but it's really good to see sports like that in the Olympics - they are very much working class sports - medals that every kid could aspire to - Much as I like the Rowing, it is very much a posh people sport - like sailing and equestrian.Certain Navigator wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:44 amLol. Best moment of the Olympics for me, so far, was when Barshim and Tamberi were both awarded Gold in the High Jump - The Italian's reaction was just fantastic - a truly fantastic sporting moment.

I think it's similar in Canada. Yes, there will be posh kids who got their start at a school that owns its own boat and pay an external coach (I was a teacher supervisor for the team one year!) But when I looked into doing some sprint canoe/kayak, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the local club's annual membership was cheaper than one season of a field sport.fishfoodie wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:01 pmDepends on where you come from.Ovals wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 7:51 pmI don't really enjoy the BMX competitions - but it's really good to see sports like that in the Olympics - they are very much working class sports - medals that every kid could aspire to - Much as I like the Rowing, it is very much a posh people sport - like sailing and equestrian.Certain Navigator wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:44 am

In England rowing might be posh sport; but that's not a universal truth. In much the same way that rugby in Limerick shows that rugby, isn't the exclusive preserve of the posh private schools; rowing in Ireland isn't the exclusive reserve of the posh boys, & girls.
The Irish medalists aren't in any way, shape or form; from wealthy backgrounds; & the rowing clubs in the Galway, & Cork are open to all.

Well there are not exactly many ghettos in the UK but there are hundreds of sailing clubs which have a very diverse membership. The club I attended from about age 6 was mostly working class families, the richer and posher tended towards keel boats and yachts.Sandstorm wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 9:59 pm Yeah, dinghy sailing is all the rage down by the ghettos bro

I sailed the UK circuit for quite a few years and found the cohort very mixed, very welcoming to those on low income with lending of equipment commonplace.

Despite decades of research,; right wing politicians still don't get that if they spend a fraction of the money, they spend on policing, on clubs like these, that give teenagers accessible, enjoyable activities; they wouldn't need those extra coppers, to chase joy riders !Sandstorm wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:28 amshaggy wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:20 amWell there are not exactly many ghettos in the UK but there are hundreds of sailing clubs which have a very diverse membership. The Aussie High Jumper Brandon Starc, first of his name, king of the Andals , the Rhoynar and the first men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, dissappointing conclusion to the series, and brother of Mitchell Starc.

Largely anecdotal but the amount of anti-social behaviour from kids I see in England has radically reduced over the last 15 years, at the same time as a lot of the funding you've mentioned has been cut.fishfoodie wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 8:38 amDespite decades of research,; right wing politicians still don't get that if they spend a fraction of the money, they spend on policing, on clubs like these, that give teenagers accessible, enjoyable activities; they wouldn't need those extra coppers, to chase joy riders !Sandstorm wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:28 amshaggy wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:20 am

As she has just failed to register a valid lift, perhaps not. After all that fuss, she is out almost immediately.

My cricket club used to have constant vandalism, up to and including the clubhouse being burned down. We've had nothing for five years or more now.
Pet theory is that the kids who used to do this spend their time gaming now.

Actually, everyone else is finished now, so she's decided to come in at 162, given the heaviest anyone else lifted was 161. That 161 being the British girl, Emily Campbell, who has got the silver medal, first ever medal in Women's weightlifting for GB>laurent wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 12:38 pmLots of tortoise blood ...Biffer wrote: Mon Aug 02, 2021 12:33 pm The Chinese girl in the weightliting is going to win this at a canter.
