The inly way you end up.on tge electoral role is if you deliberately register, or complete the annual canvas. But you don't need to prove any ID at any point
I have no idea how it happened, but I can categorically say that I didn't register.

I wasn't even a citizen at the time. There is no way I considered myself as eligible to vote and no way I would have applied to do so.
I can see how you might have completed the canvas without realising what that entailed
I think it's more likely that my name was added to the voter's roll on the basis of my owning property.

The point is that I never applied to be on the voter's roll as I wasn't a citizen at the time and I didn't think I was eligible.

This undermines the suggestion that photo ID is necessary for registration to vote in the UK as I didn't have any. (My Zimbabwean passport was refused renewal due to me not being black).

Owning property doesn't automatically get you on the roll - in fact there's no method to automatically get on the roll. It's a pro-active thing that you have to complete a form. if a civil servant thinks that you should be on the roll, they can't add you - but they can instruct you to register.

I agree that you don't need any sort of ID to get on the roll. The annual canvas is literally enter the person's name, gender, a DOB on a form. From memory, the instructions are for a single member of the household to complete it for everyone living there who will be 18 or over by x date

I may be wrong, my memory is hazy, but when I moved into a new area, I received a form that said... "Are the details on this form correct? Do nothing and it stays as is.." I remember I added a few other occupants. But you may have done nothing.. so were automatically added to voter registration?

Perhaps.

That would possibly make sense.

I do know that it came as a bit of a surprise to me.

In Ireland canvassers for Political parties used to take peoples details when they called door-to-door, & if you answered that you weren't registered they'd often ask you if you wanted to be; & they'd put your details in for you.

In the cases of some of them; they wouldn't even ask your permission; they'd just do it; & I know a few people you used to get polling cards at multiple addresses as a result.

In some ways it was handy; as students in particular wouldn't be registered at their term address; but at home; but the database was full for wrong information; so they did a purge a few years ago, & got rid of most of them.

Where I am you cannot register to vote without providing a verifiable document of ID and proof of address ... exactly as I needed to do just so I could borrow books from the local council library !

Prior to an election, a voter slip is posted to your address.
You take that slip to the voting center where it is exchanged for a ballot paper after you answer an identification question. Your name on the roll is then ruled through in ink as having voted.

Stacey Abrams was always touted as a strong candidate to be Biden's Vice President because she fulfilled all apparent requirements for the position -- she was female and black.

Abrams made repeated shrill condemnation of the proposed ID verification as "Jim Crow on Steroids".
But with all recent polls indicating that the bulk of American voters approve of such, she has done a flip-flop to endorse Voter ID, exactly as the Democrats now blame Defund the Police on the Republicans because all polls show that even Blacks want more cops on the street, not fewer.
You guys seem to have missed the memo passing on the instruction as to the current position(s) you should be adopting.

Went to college with a few lads from Youghal and they all got added to the register by their local TD.

The measure taken to restrict voting for the parts of the electorate seen as hostile to the Republican Party are not just limited to requiring photo ID, but increasing the waiting times for voting in certain areas by limiting the availability voting points and preventing those waiting in line from being offered water or other sustenance as they wait.

These are clearly attempts to disenfranchise voters who are deemed not to vote for the correct party.

It's more odious provisions are aimed at reducing the number of options for how you can vote; & indeed doing so to the point where it is logistically, impossible for all registered voters to vote in a ward; if the GOP doesn't fancy their chances.
How do they achieve this?
They showed their hand in November, in Texas, when they tried to reduce the number of polling places, & cutting the hours they would be open; & also reducing the number of drop boxes in a district, to the point where people would have to get in the car & drive for a hour, or two, to get to a box where they could place their sealed postal ballot.

There were people standing in line, for 5-6 hours, waiting to vote; because the GOP didn't want them to vote; it was trying to get them to give up on exercising their vote; by making the process as painful, as possible
So what in the current bill is classed as voter suppression?

Both times I've heard this Jim Crow on steroids stuff recently (Georgia and Texas) when I've looked at the actual voter laws it's clear that if people want to vote then there are plenty of options and opportunities to do so.

You forgot to mention that it's only certain people who can't offer food and drink, and it's only within a certain distance of a polling station. Sounds pretty cruel when you leave out that important info though.

Remember that gigantic lawsuit that Dominion voting machines took against the nutters ?

Well this morning; they tried to get a summary dismissal of the case .... & they failed ..... so now Dominions lawyers get to depose these shit stains, & get them to swear, under oath; what was said, & when, & by whom !

And Rudy better hope for a sudden infusion of cash; because he's got some big bills coming in from his lawyers !
A federal judge has rejected bids by three top promoters of President Donald Trump’s election fraud claims to throw out defamation lawsuits they face over a slew of allegedly false statements they made about the election-technology firm Dominion.

Lawyers for former federal prosecutor Sidney Powell, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and My Pillow founder Mike Lindell argued that the suits were legally deficient, but U.S. District Court Judge Carl Nichols ruled on Wednesday that the suits could proceed.

Just wondering how the Blacks in the US are ever going to be able to do anything ever again.
Presumably you will only get your vaccine passport if you had acceptable ID proof when you were vaccinated, and as we all know it's totally unfair to demand that of Blacks because they are incapable of producing such.
Not to mention that Blacks are by far the racial group most resistant to getting the vaccines.

Vaccine passports is Jim Crow on steroids.

And by the by I had a good CACKLE yesterday when Biden addressed the nation and summed up the withdrawal as "an extraordinary success" (which)"was all Trump's fault."

The totally fucked up Texas Republican anti-abortion law came into effect today, making virtually all abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy illegal. Most women aren't even aware they're pregnant at 6 weeks - over 85% of abortions happen after 6 weeks.

The new law also sets out to financially reward Texans for dobbing in their fellow citizens who "aid and abet" anyone "seeking" an abortion. Apparently, aiding and abetting can include such heinous offences as driving a pregnant woman who's seeking medical advice to a doctor. Orwellian shit.

These are the same Republican state politicians who vehemently oppose mask mandates as govt overreach.

If men could get pregnant, there'd be free-of-charge abortion clinics on every street corner in America.

It gets worse. Anyone can take legal action against someone for ‘aiding and abetting’, and if they win, get a minimum payout of $10k, but if the accused wins they get nothing and can’t even claim their legal costs back. It’s a law designed to put abortion clinics and doctors out of business.

^^^ That's just Desperate Dan stuff to feed the glib.
In 2014 Obama released the Taliban 5 from Guantanamo Bay, four of whom have taken the top positions in the new Taliban government.

Trump intended to withdraw all eligible citizens and local helpers first, then take out the military equipment, and lastly withdraw the troops. Biden the buffoon, tried to do it in the reverse order. And handed 90 billion worth of sophisticated military equipment, the most sophisticated of which will be dismantled and reproduced by the Chinese.
Those millions Beijing coughed up to Hunter and 'the big guy' were an absolute bargain.

Trump intended to keep Bagram Air Base so that should the Taliban not sit on their hands like good boys then he would obliterate them ... as the petrified Taliban understood only too well that he would.
By abandoning Bagram, Biden removed all reason for the Taliban to behave, and by leaving the Afghan army without any air cover he shattered their morale.
And, lookee-lookee, seems that China will be installing itself at Bagram ... giving the wink to Joe as they do so, to signal that 'the cheque is in the mail'.

Trump's pull-out date was factored to occur when military activity always grinds down. Biden withdrew in the prime military operative period.

Biden claimed it was impossible to break Trump's agreement, but Trump himself broke his own agreement just three days after coming to a deal with the Taliban when they tried him out and were given an immediate bloody nose. Thereafter, the Taliban never said boo until he was out of the White House and they were then safe to do whatever they wanted.

I see if California Governor Newsom successfully defeats the recall vote, the Trumpist nutter that was put up to the job by the usual horror show has said he may not accept the result.

In 2014 Obama released the Taliban 5 from Guantanamo Bay, four of whom have taken the top positions in the new Taliban government.Drump released 5,000 Taliban prisoners, one of whom is now their leader..

Trump intended to withdraw all eligible citizens and local helpers first, then take out the military equipment, and lastly withdraw the troops.Drump reduced the military personnel to 2,500, no-one has ever found his plan for evacuating civilians, also, the civilians had been informed for 7 months to get out. Biden the buffoon, tried to do it in the reverse order. And handed 90 billion worth of sophisticated military equipment, the most sophisticated of which will be dismantled and reproduced by the Chinese.Jumped from 84 to 90 now! Wow! Plus, 84 billion was the total cost of the 20 year campaign, it included rent, wages, infrastructure etc. The equipment seen in the hands of the Taliban was seized from the Afghan army not the US..
Those millions Beijing coughed up to Hunter and 'the big guy' were an absolute bargain.Still no evidence like the evidence from the rigged election..

Trump intended to keep Bagram Air Base so that should the Taliban not sit on their hands like good boys then he would obliterate them ... as the petrified Taliban understood only too well that he would.
By abandoning Bagram, Biden removed all reason for the Taliban to behave, and by leaving the Afghan army without any air cover he shattered their morale.Plenty of air cover during the evacuation and drones are still overhead
And, lookee-lookee, seems that China will be installing itself at Bagram ... giving the wink to Joe as they do so, to signal that 'the cheque is in the mail'.

Trump's pull-out date was factored to occur when military activity always grinds down. Biden withdrew in the prime military operative period.Drump wanted full military withdrawal by May..

If you truly believe that they were scared of him, dream on
And don't forget, Drump also claimed, multiple times, he'd eradicated ISIS 100 %.

Trump did even before they counted the votes, along with a good number of other GOP members. The actual worrying part is how many insane/sociopathic secretaries of state we might now get who'll get in in the back of a Trump endorsement, the likes of Raffensperger look to be going the way of the dodo

I think they'll be happy enough. They milked the Ozzies for a load of money, & delivered nothing in return.

If they want any new contracts, they need to maybe consider the possibility of actually being able to deliver on the promises of their sales people !
